New RV'r from Connecticut

Hello all, just wanted to make a brief introduction. My family and I are entering the world of RV living, we are in our late 30s with two teenagers at home, full time employed but looking to start enjoying some stress free time away on a regular basis. Hoping for March through November, with a couple 3 day weekends per month and a few long distance vacations per year. Were in the market for a 5er, probably a Jayco Prem or Pinnacle. Floor plan shopping is difficult, as the kids are at that age where one day they're hung oh and the next could care less. So it's been difficult making a decision.

I have a great deal to learn and am looking toward the group for some great wisdom.

After spending many years as a professional pilot both corporate and airlines, internationally, it will be very nice to leave the hotels behind for a while, the security lines, and the entire scene for a self paced lifestyle. Still employed in aviation safety, now ensuring other pilots and airlines do their part to keep you all safe when you are in the skies.

Thanks in advance for the acquaintanceship as well as the great wisdom.

Be safe out there!

Thanks. Sorry for the typo, 'hung oh' was supposed to read 'gung ho", darn autocorrect.

Were actually pretty seriously considering a Seismic, bring along some kayaks, kid's friends, the Lab, and our bikes, etc. great area for a rainy day!

Thanks again for the warm welcomes so far.

Welcome to the JOF and the family camping lifestyle! It seems to be the consensus of the forum that floor plan is the single most important factor when selecting the "perfect" home-on-wheels. If you haven't done so already, I might suggest calling a family meeting to discuss the primary, secondary, and tertiary uses and use season(s) of the rig. A summer beach house for family and friends will require a different set of parameters than a deer camp in late November for the "huntin' buddies". Also set a budget with a "target" number, and a "can't go above" number. Then discuss what each family member 1) must have (can't live without), 2) really wants to have (if it's in the budget), 3) would be nice to have (but not a deal breaker), 4) can't tolerate (you don't even want to go there). Write down each person's list (or have them make there own), then make a chart showing the responses in each category. For instance: Must Have - comfortable sleeping for 4 (or more) people, cloths storage for 4 (or more) people, enough indoor seating (sometimes it rains), large refrigerator(s) and pantry storage, large holding tanks (if you don't plan on using full hook-up sites), etc. Can't tolerate might be a certain color interior, or a weight that exceeds your tow vehicle's capacity. In cases of conflicting needs, Mom's & Dad's win! Leave a spot on the chart to write in the camper's make & model, as well as where you saw it. Make several copies and fill out one for each model you're considering. Then, compare the charts. The one with the most positive items checked off wins! And the entire family feels like they've had a voice in this family decision.

Just my 2 cents worth, but it helped my make my decision.

Brownie, excellent idea! And at the end of the day, the DW mamma wins anyway ;-). That is a great idea though. We are set on Jayco, Premiere, Pinnacle, or Seismic (most interest so far). I also have to look downwind (in terms of time) in 4-5 years when the two kids (one very much adult by then) want nada to do with this scene what will serve us then as well.

DieselX, I looked it up, great place and yes very very close to our home. For food, pizza in New Haven is king, as well as home of the hamburger birthplace. If anyone coming through or up this way please send me a message, we've got restaurants nailed down for this area along 95 and 91. Be glad to help! Thanks Dies

Our kids were 100% into camping when they were very young to about 15 y/o. Then they hit the 'too cool for mom & dad' stage and it was just wife & I camping. Now they are 19 & 21, both single but go camping with us whenever they can. Through all those years we have gone through 4 different campers. Our most recent was purchased with just mh wife & I in mind.

My recommendation is that you find a floor plan that meets most of your needs but I hope you discover that the higher value and enjoyment comes from quality time and enjoying the experience with many friends & family.

P25ct, welcome to JOF from Northeast Ohio.

As someone that used to travel extensively for business, us road warriors thank you for your efforts to keep us all safe! Even if it means needing to spend a little extra time in the club.
