New to the forum and Jayco
Been lurking for a few days around the site. Seems to be a lot of knowledge here and experience as well. I hope to get familiar with our new to us Travel Trailer and learn as much as I can about it. We recently purchased a 1989 Jayco Jayswan 29ft. TT as a starter camper for me and the wife. I have camped in a TT before when I was young with my parents so am not completely new to the idea but I was young and didn't pay attention back then. lol
My tow vehicle is a 1999 Chevy Suburban K1500 w/5.7 liter vortec engine, auto trans and 3:73 gearing. I have yet to weigh the rig hooked up. I just picked up the TT this past sunday. I need to rewire the Burban for the 7 pin trailer plug and brake controller before I can hook to it.(I barrowed a 1 ton to pick it up).
Glad to be a part of this forum. Any thoughts or advise with this Jayco would be appreciated as well.

Congratulations on the new-to-you Jayco and welcome to the forum.
If you've been lurking, then you probably already know about weight distributing hitches (WDH), trailer sway, tire age/date codes, and tow vehicle PAYLOAD limitations. No doubt you will be paying attention to THIS trailer and getting it ready for camping fun.

Welcome and enjoy.
Besure roof is well sealed which is usually the death for older units.

A few suggestions I can make, especially with a used and older TT:
1. Invest in a weight distribution hitch! This alone will make your towing a much more pleasant experience.
2. Thoroughly check your axles, bearings, brakes, shackles, bolts and springs for wear. Ensure they are in good condition and road worthy.
3. Check the condition of your tires. Replace if worn and/or showing cracks in the rubber.
4. Fully test your brakes after the controller install.
5. Check your battery for serviceability.
Others will have additional items for you to ponder as well. Have many fun and safe trips!

The PO threw in the WD hitch with the deal, a Reese with the friction anti-sway device as well. The tires are only about a year old, plenty of tread and no dry cracks, wheels were powder coated when the tires were installed and bearings packed. Normally I don't trust some one else's word so I will be checking things myself anyway.
The roof is leak free (no signs of leaks anywhere) PO gave me the remainder of some tape he was using on the roof to cover the caulk seem just as a precaution. They were using the trailer until the week before we purchased it. I will be finishing it soon just for piece of mind. Only about 4 foot left to do anyway.
1 of the 2 on board batteries is new, the other only 2 years old. Also, I checked the trailer brakes with the vehicle I used to tow it home. That vehicle is equipped with a brake controller. Brakes did work well.

Welcome to the forum. I am attaching the list my wife and I made for preparing for TT trips. Modify (or destroy) to your hearts content. We found it very helpful for our first few trips, and just as helpful when we thought we were becoming experienced and then laughed at ourselves when we went through the checklist after our 5th outing. As I told my Dad, when I was a teenager I knew everything, amazing how much I forgot as I got older.
