Newbie - Distance Question

Hello,

We have frequented this forum for guidance regarding our 2007 Jayco which we purchased in March. We have taken several local trips this past summer and are currently working out our itinerary for a trip to Mount Rushmore for June/July 2014. When mapping out this long distance, is there a “rule of thumb” for travel miles per day? We are guess-estimating 450 miles a day as an average, any suggestions?

Thank you

This year we spent 3 months traveling out west from FL and a 4th month in the Blue Ridge Mountains of Northern GA. While traveling we averaged about 350 miles a day with an occasional 400 mile day. Was not in a hurry, and cruised along at around 60mph. Was not tired after traveling and we were at the next CC in the early afternoon to enjoy the rest of the day. This is what works for us, the dogs and the bird.

We spent 9 weeks 9,000 miles going out West this last Spring.
Never did more than 300 miles. With stops etc., we end up averaging about 50 mph. So 6 hours was our limit.
Pretty comfortable drive. If we did 6 hrs, we spent 1 day relaxing and site seeing locally.
That worked for us.

For me it all depends on my destination. If we are going on a long trip then we try and keep it at around 300 miles per day if our schedule allows. But if time is of the Essenes then we suck it up and put some miles and smiles on. I like driving at night so pulling a all night er is no problem. A few years ago we left the Houston area headed to Disney and drove straight through only stopping to gas and eat then back on the road. Worn out when we got there but had scheduled a day of relaxing.

My past experience includes two destinations that are of great distance, one in southern California is about 825 miles, the other to the San Juan Islands in Washington state is 700 miles. I find that 700 miles is just about max for a single day trip, even though we did travel the 825 in a day. This was the choice of myself, the DW and the kids to just push and get to the destination.

Honestly, the preferred distance for me would be about 600 miles for a single day drive, and if driving multiple days I would choose no more than 500 per day.

If you are planning 450 a day I think you are setting a reasonable goal.

Ultimately it depends on how far you have to go and how much time you have. We went to Rushmore, Yellowstone, and Glacier last summer. We had 19 nights available for the trip, we drove about 3500 miles in total. Some days we did as few as a 150 miles and one day we push something around 700 miles (west Glacier to Minot ND) doing about 60-65 mph. It was a long day. The DW did state she was tired of sitting, the kid did not mind, but we had plenty of things for both of them to do. We stopped about every 150 miles for fuel and stretch the legs which helped. I try to break a long trip. I to have driven late into the night so the DW and kid can sleep through the miles and then “camp” in a Walmart parking lot for the rest of the night. We have also left early (for example leaving west Glacier), the kid was still in his pajamas, and we tried to minimize waking him up when we got ready to go, so he would sleep in the TV for the first few hours.

If we need a long day, we do it to get miles under the belt, but we then try to make up for it at our destination, by having plenty of time to do what we want and by taking our time at those sites. Luckily our son loves to travel, and has traveled long distances since he was very young.

Longest trip I've towed was from Nashville, In to just south of Tampa. 700 miles on day 1 [Tifton, Ga.], then 300 miles the next day. HAD to get through Atlanta on day 1 as anytime you go through Atlanta, it's quite the experience. Maybe someday I'll be able to take a trip where we're not in such a hurry. I think 500 miles a day would be doable and not to taxing. The longest I've ever driven in one day was from Martinsville In., to Laramie, Wyoming-17 hours. Of course, I was a lot younger then.

Your age and temperament have a lot to do with mileage. When we were younger, we tended to over extend ourselves on a vacation. We set goals that left you needing another vacation to get over the first trip. We always start out with a 5 or 600 hundred mile day. But that is the last one. After that it's doubtful if we average 300. These trips are call vacations, not marathons!! If you reach too far on a trip, you end up exhausted. Everyone is different. In our case, we don't set goals for distance. If we happen to find a place that we really like, we may spend another day or two investigating the area. Many a trip we have shortened our distance and determined that we would reach out further next year. I have over time shortening our expectations to the point that we actually see more then we first anticipated. That trip that you are taking we took in 2 years. Seven weeks each time. Not to say that's what you should do. Just take plenty of time to enjoy your surroundings.

Thanks for all the valuable information everyone. You put our minds at ease that we're on target with the itinerary, and not to over reach our expectations since we are not completing a Marathon as “Ela1948” put it. But in order to reach our designated CG reservations we may have to take the approach of "lx22f/c" at times and "suck it up and put some miles and smiles on”!

Lee and Kelly, Where you are traveling and the time of year make a difference as well. If you're in the plains and on a straight stretch, 450 miles is a full day, but many travelers go farther. During the long summer days we have stopped in the early evening because we had a stop planned. There were still several hours of daylight left and after a short rest we wished we had driven a few more hours. Keep in mind the trip is as important as the destination.

On the long trips with several one night stops in a row, we get road weary even on the short mileage days. A second night at the same spot really freshens us up.
