Newbie introduction

Hi all,
Just joined today and am looking forward to learning as much as I can about RV'ing.....

My boyfriend and I have been researching and discussing purchasing an RV and have settled on the Jayco Greyhawk 30X or 31DS, either 2017 or 2018 depending on what we find at a decent price point. Those two models have the floorplan we prefer. We will start out as weekenders and long holiday campers but will someday be full-timers. We have some time on the latter and want to use the RV to explore what that will be like.

That being said, what has everyone's experiences been like with both purchasing their rig and using it? Any advice for us would be greatly appreciated.

Hi to you and welcome to the forum.

It sounds like you are not currently RVers and are truly newbies. A good first step to consider would be to begin by renting one. You can learn a lot by reading and looking on the lot, but it's tough to beat actual experience.

welcome... make sure you have a large enough tow vehicle for it and a weight distribution hitch..


I second other advice to rent one first and see if you like it.. a brand new RV after owning it for 20 min has a depreciation that is pretty steep especially if you don't like camping... but maybe you are already avid campers and have done a lot of camping, you don't say so I don't want to assume you don't..


Used is also a great option 5-7 years old seems to be a sweet spot..

Thanks oldmanAZ!! We are considering renting one first just to try it out and couldn't agree with you more on the practical experience. We know it's a whole new ballgame with RVing and realize there's a learning curve. I've been camping the last three years with friends in their popup and have thoroughly enjoyed that but popups are a lot of work. These friends are actually looking at replacing that with a TT. So it's a wonderful new adventure that we are definitely looking forward to......

So I did family camping as a kid and was even a hiker/backpacker many, many years ago. Real roughing it stuff too - having to pack in your own water, dehydrating my own food, etc. - so I am a little familiar with 'getting out there'. Like I mentioned in my other reply, I've been camping with friends the last three years in their popup. It's an older unit that they got with a song but it's showing it's age a little now. They are looking at upgrading as well. So I absolutely love camping!! The weekend trips are leaving me hungry for more. But I agree that the RVing is a whole new ballgame.

Thanks for the advice on a used unit. It's still in the realm of possibility!!
