Wink Newbie looking for advice trailer towing

Hi,
My name is Dave, I live in Tonawada, NY. I am 68 years old, retired and have a 2014 17 foot Starcraft Launch. I will tow with a Silverado 4x4 double cab and 6 foot bed and V8. I do have brakes on the trailer and a brake controller. If I leave NY in dead of winter with snowy roads am I safe? That is my big question!! I intend to head south and west.

Any advice will be greatly appreciated.

Assuming you are taking things slow and easy, you should be as safe as any other time. Allow yourself extra stopping distance due to the trailer.
Make sure your trailer brakes are locking up the trailer wheels when you are only moderately slowing down.

Welcome to the forum, from the other side of Rochester! You'll be OK if you use a lot of common sense, and think ahead. Try to leave when the roads are as bare as possible, to your schedule. If they're snow covered, try to be on the road when it's not rush hour, and be a rubberneck to the traffic around you. Leave lots of room in front of you, expect the unexpected, and don't drive outside your comfort zone. If you always have a way out of uncomfortable situations, it'll be better.

Welcome to the forum.

Let the weather schedule your timing and route. Watch for periods of calm weather and wait until you see several days of good weather ahead on your route before starting out.
Interstates receive the most attention and are cleared first so they will be clear before any others, so plan on staying on them.
Watch the outside temperatures when it is near freezing and don't drive after dark. After dark, a wet road can turn into 'black ice' quickly.

CONGRATULATIONS on the JAYCO!!!

...and WELCOME TO JOF!!! The members here are GREAT!!! There is a lot of GREAT information to be found here. I am sure that you will have information and pictures to share with us... so please do!!

Just take it slow and as others have mentioned... you need to be thinking ahead. That is why we moved to Florida, the last FROST at the house was 4 years ago and lasted 2 hours.. (we used to live on the IL/WI border and I drove 60 miles to work in any weather..... uhhh)

Good Luck

Don
