Another way we were taught to test them is to put a vom meter set for dc voltage, across the terminals after discharging. Remove them and reverse the leads. You should see a momentary voltage spike on the meter as it discharges.
Try it on both and replace the one that does not do it. Many times the ends will bulge out when they go bad.
Be careful not to touch both leads with your bare hands, In school, we had to do that to remind us to never do it.
