Unhappy Posting Pictures

Any idea why every time I try to post pictures they are displayed either sideways or upside down?

We haven't tried it yet but heard on a sister forum that if you open the picture and make any small edit and then upload it it will always be upright.

Great, thanks! I'll try that and let you know if it works.

This happens pretty often with pics taken on mobile devices. You take them landscape and your phone displays them correctly, but the forum software can't spin pics the way your phone does and assumes that portrait orientation is the correct one. The small edit fixes this issue for most folks

Actually it isn't the forum software, it is the device itself - Apple and Samsung being the biggest offenders. Since the original iPhone, Apple programmed the Meta Data incorrectly for portrait style photos (photos that are taller than they are wide). They coded the photo size in the Meta Data the same for both landscape and portrait style photos. Why Apple hasn't fixed this, I don't know. Some how, Samsung and a few other device manufacturers programmed their photos incorrectly too.

Web services like Facebook will re-write the meta data when photos are uploaded, so they always show up correctly. However, services, like this message board don't re-write the meta data so the photo is displayed based on the incorrect meta data. Editing a photo will re-write the meta data correctly.

A small edit worked for me, too, with pictures off of a Samsung S6 and S7. I usually just crop a bit. I had previously tried to delete all EXIF matadata (and hence rotation data) but that didn't work.

Thanks for the tip!
