Before those shows…before TV, my favorite show on the big radio in the living room was The Lone Ranger every Saturday morning. There were many other programs that I can’t remember. Sunday nights the whole family sat around the radio and listened to comedy shows The George Burns and Gracie Allen Show, General Electric Theater, Our Miss Brooks if I remember correctly. A loooong time ago.

That's an easy one . It was Petey, a Pit Bull Terrier.

The radio stopped working in the early 1990s, so my father sold it to a collector.
Tucked away in one of our closets is an old wooden console radio from probably the '40's or '50's that was my grandparents. I will have to dig it out sometime and see exactly what it is. I know that it worked back in the late '70's. They would still listen to it in the mornings when I was young.

A long time ago in Erie, PA was a 5 pm show on the local TV station called The Pappy Show.Pappy was this old guy with coveralls, plaid shirt, and a beat up felt hat, who was the MC. He introduced cartoons and skits, and recognized kids on the bleachers whom were having birthdays. They got to say HI to viewers. One day there was this little boy who wanted to say Hi to his family. He said "Hi mommy, Hi daddy, hi sister" and while extending his middle finger upwards he said "Right there Herbie." We saw Pappy grab his belly and rolled back in laughter and the the TV went dark until a commercial came on. After the return to the show the kid was gone. The best part was the next day when the school greeting between the students was "Right there Herbie."

How about the Tumbling Tireman? The local tire shop would give these out as advertisement. A plastic man built into this tire was put on a ladder and he would tumble to the bottom. The were about a foot tall. I can't remember which tire he advertised.

My one aspiration in life was to be successful enough to own a string of poloponies... (Art was great!)

The Gulf stations gave out orange plastic double horseshoes to stick on the back of your car. In winter, they'd give you an orange Styrofoam ball to stick on top of the radio antenna. They helped to see cars coming when the snowbanks got over 5 or 6' high. Probably not popular in California!

And STP bumper stickers. Kids put them on their bikes.

  • When TV stations would announce whenever a TV show about to come on was in color (the birth of the NBC peacock).
  • Saturday morning cartoons on TV.
  • Watching Captain Kangaroo before leaving for school and Mickey Mouse Club after you came home.
  • Aluminum insulated boxes that sat outside your door for the milkman to leave your order inside.
  • Drinking from garden hoses before they were declared dangerous due to the cancer causing chemicals they were made from.

Wolf whistles plumbed to the engine intake, and a pull wire through the dash. Might still have one somewhere.

Coal chutes built into the basement of houses. We took over a friend's basement as our "clubhouse" when their dog died...we had to clean it up, of course . The size of the chute was perfect for a fan which was our only ventilation.

As I got older, old timers told me the second thing to go was memory.

I forget what was first.
