The battery sat under the rear seat. You really didn't want a heavy friend sitting back there. It got exciting when the seat springs shorted out the battery posts.

I changed out the generator brushes while it was on the motor. They were so simple to work on. Now they're collectible.

Bought cold apples from a vending machine, had to adjust the tach and dwell when putting in new points, drive in San Francisco fog with vacuum wipers on my 56 GMC, generators instead of alternators.

Rotary dial phones, with party line, prefix on the 7 digit numbers started with 2 letters.

Today I received a plastic bag package from Amazon. It reminded me that my first memory of sending packages was through the US mail. The package had to be wrapped in brown paper, tied with special string, and had to have a special address label. Mom figured out she could use brown paper grocery bags to wrap the package. She got funny looks at the post office, but they accepted them.

As do I. Right after we did the pledge of allegance the principal would come on the p.a. With a couple of verses. Very short.
These days someone would have a stroke over that.

If I recall, most classrooms had an American flag (48 stars in my younger years), We all stood by our desks, hands over hearts and recited the Pledge and then listened to the national anthem and/or God Bless America. We also listened to John Phillip Sousa's marches occasionally during assemblies. NASCAR races are about the only major public venues that do a national anthem, say a prayer display flags with often a semi tractor pulling one around the track and most fans in attendance generally seem proud to be Americans

Our 1968 Chevrolet Belair had the filler behind the plate. I found one of the plate holders in the wrecking yard and put it on the front of my 1984 pick up. I cut a hole in the bumper and put a 2" receiver behind the plate. That is where I would put the 8,000 lb portable winch. I he sheriff pulled me over because he could not see the plate when the winch was in. I still have the fold down plate holder.

My first real job at a Texaco station, $1.00 an hour. Boss always went home early and left me in charge until 9pm when I locked up, put the money and credit cards receipts in the safe and hung up the closed sign.

I remember when I said the "new" Pledge of Allegiance in 1954 that included the words "Under God" for the first time. It was signed into law on Flag Day, June 6, 1954 by President Dwight D. Eisenhower.

I'm so ancient I remember when I bought my '79 F350. putting 30 gallons of gas in the two tanks, it cost *gasp* nine dollars.

Speaking of gas prices, we had a major gas war in the mid '60s and the Sunoco station I worked PT at went down to 9 cents a gallon for the 190 blend. The 260 high test which my '63 Ford with the 406cid/405Hp engine loved, was only 25 cents.

Age is very relative. I’m 47, so young by some people’s reference point. My whole career I’ve been the young guy. Now, it’s changing, as I’ve been working with guys as young as 23. Humor is different, communication is different, expectations…I could go on and on. Makes me feel like the old guy now. Some haven’t even seen the original Star Wars movies, or listened to a CD or tape. Never experienced a recession(be rectified soon). They talk on “insta” and “snap”. They consider 400k a good deal on a home purchase. On the flip side I’m working this week with a 77 year old. I relate better to that guy.

In summary, I’m so old that I’ve got to learn how to communicate with the incoming work force.

The youngsters at work are starting to tell me- get out of the way old man. Would not be so bad if they actually knew what they were doing. We work on gates/gate operators. Bet your storage lot has one.
Did a remove and replace yesterday, 5.5 hours. Spent 6.5 hours recently fine tuning a youngsters install.
Todays psa, make sure it's right before you weld it in place.
My toughest to date.

I am old enough to have used a lawnmower that didn't have an engine. It had reels and was hard to push if you didn't mow often. It was 108 here in Texas yesterday and I highly suspect a mower like that would likely be the end of me if I had to use one now.

However,
It was a reel gas saver... lol

Some of the things I've seen: hundreds upon hundreds of miles of 10 and 12' chainlink fence topped with barbed wire put in place for no other purpose than keeping millions of people prisoner in E. Germany and Czechoslavakia. Walked along on the W.German side of the border as work crews under armed guard repaired the Western side of the fence. ( anytime a workcrew was in the 50 meter buffer we were assigned to walk along to keep the guards from firing into our side if a worker ran). Stood across from Czech. Secret police (Stazi) on the border line and within arms reach of one another in staring contests intended to intimidate profligate and weak Americans ( not gonna happen). How very soon we apparently forget.

The lowest I’ve personally paid for gas was $0.19 but I remember dad paying less when I was a “yung-un”.
