Love this bridge.

This is what happens when you don't watch heights.

This bridge, located in Durham, North Carolina is nick named "The Can Opener"

In 2019, the railroad spent $500,000 to raise the bridge to 12' 4". Still not enough for trucks and RV's.

When they reopened the roadway, it only took six hours for a Ryder truck to go under and take its roof off.

There is even an electric sign that says "OVER HEIGHT TURN NOW"

In 27 years of police work I learned that signs are irrelevant to many people!!!

I bet someone could make a lot of $$$ inventing and selling a low clearance warning system for inside the RV \ tow vehicle. I bet it wouldn't be hard to manufacture such a device seeing how all of the electronic items have advanced so much over the years. ~CA

However, I suspect now that this is available that it will only be a matter of time when the sensors can see far enough ahead of you so you can stop in time if you were travelling down the highway or secondary roads. Thanks again, ~CA

Best option is to invest in an RV navigation system where you can enter your RV's dimensions and let the navigation system keep you off the roads where the clearance is too low.

Low bridge!

We recently were going through a small central Texas town and came to an old railroad trestle that was marked as 13’4”. Our fifth wheel is 13’4” !! It was one of those “OH SHOOT!” moments! My wife got out, did her best to hold up traffic for me, and I backed up on the street until I came to an intersection that I backed into and turned around. Pulled over and waited for my sweetie, then found another route through town. It sure paid to be paying attention! Bacon saved that day!

We were returning home from our last trip and came upon a ovderpass that was marked 13'6'. My rig is measured at 13'3". I pulled up slowly as thee was no traffic in either direction.

I know that the front AC is the high point on my rig and my wife got out and looked as we cleared it by inches!

My Garmin GPS has routed me around railroad trestles several times that were low.

We were headed from cape cod to New York City and somewhere along the way we ended up on a Parkway that was restricted to cars only. At the first exit we got off and ended up in some small town. Trying to get back to the interstate we were going down some city roads following Google Maps directions. I made a turn and saw a sign that says bridge clearance 11'6" 1 mile ahead. My trailer is too close to that height so I pulled over on the shoulder to examine the map and find the best way out. A local pulled over and asked if I needed a route back to i95. I followed him through town and he got us safely back to the interstate.

On our last trip to FL (Feb 2021) I decided on Hwy 82 down thru Mississippi and Alabama (most direct route to our first stopover). Checked clearance chart for Hwy 82 thru MS, and AL. No problems. Until Gordo, AL.
Came upon a railroad trestle, clearance height 13'6". My unit is 13'4".
I told Beck to stop, stop, stop!
I got out and walked ahead, stopping traffic as we inched beneath the trestle. Got thru without a scratch, but it sure was scary.

I will also warn that some of these signs may NOT accurate. After years of repaving, the height clearance could be considerably less!

How do rv'ers not know the height of their rig. Especially something as big as a 5er. Same with truck drivers. I would think knowing the height of your load would be a requirement of your job. But you can't fix stupid.

I know...there is no excuse for not knowing. I found that the height measurement on the Jayco website does not always match reality. Jayco says my height is 10' 5-1/4". I measured it at 10' 7". I did round up to the next inch. After measuring my height, I wrote it down and taped it on my windshield so I have a ready reference. Here is a link to my original post on the subject.

Gorbo, Al Though they would have that new section tied into 4th st. By now. 4th st goes over the tracks.
