Navy water conservation saying?

"If it's brown, flush it down....if it's yellow, let it mellow".
I heard this saying from a Navy guy a few years ago...I don't know if the Navy practices this while under way but it make me laugh when I think of that guy.

Made me chuckle - I did almost 10 years in the Navy and recall this quite well. We had water rations a number of times on the ship with this, as well as no showers. Let's just say AC is your friend when the smell starts to go up...

The other was the sewage system backed up because some dummy crapped his drawers then flushed them so the guys in the ships laundry didn't find out and harass him. Turns out the flushed drawers had to be fished out by a hull tech who read the guy's name off the stencil - the whole ship knew then which was much worse. During that time all the berthings (where you sleep and where the bathroom/showers are at) had overflows of blackwater (2-3" of it) onto the deck in the bathroom where it sloshed around while the ship moved - oh, the pleasant memories of sea life!!

A lot of RV life is like my Navy days so it's easy to not make the same mistakes.

In my days of the U.S. Coast Guard, i was the auxiliary division in charge. For those of you that don't know what the "A-Gang" crew did, we were responsible for all the water, sewage, fresh water making machinery and HVAC equipment. Dealing with all these systems were not bad at all until you put females onboard. I could not tell you the number of times our crew had to clean the "feminine products" and condom's from sewage pumps and tanks.

My rule in the RV, you plug it up, you clean it.

My grandmother had that saying in her old house in the Appalachians of Northern Georgia. Her septic tank wasn't up to the task when there was a full house. I was about 10 or 12 years old at the time, and I did something in the john that can only be described as horrendous. Well, grandma went in a little while after me, came back out and said in that sweet Georgian drawl of hers, something to the effect of "honey, I know my tank don't do so well, but when you do something like THAT, flush it down please."

I turned red as a fire truck, the whole family laughed heartily for a good spell!
