The Designer, by Ken Lane

For those of you who sometimes question the ancestry of people who design products with apparently no regard for ease of servicing said products, this poem is for you:

The Designer, by Ken Lane

The designer bent across his board,
Wonderful things in his head were stored.

And he said, as he stroked his throbbing bean,
"Now, how can I make this thing hard to machine ?"

If this piece here were only straight,
I know this thing would work first rate.

But 'twould be so easy to turn and bore,
It would never make the machinists sore.

I'll just put in a right angle there,
Now watch those guys tear out their hair !

I'll put the holes that hold the cap
Way down here where they're hard to tap.

This piece won't work, I'll bet a buck,
'Cause it can't be held in a clamp, a vise, a shoe or a chuck.

It can't be drilled and it can't be ground,
In fact the design is exceedingly sound.

He looked again and he cried, "At last,
Success is mine ! It can't even be cast !"

If people who design things had to use them and fix them we would all live in a much simpler world.

X2, Clutch. I have long thought that the best way for us to get well-designed cars would be to require all auto designers to perform all possible repair jobs on their products within a specified period of time. If they couldn't do that, then require them to redesign it until they can.
