The New Monk
A new monk arrived at the abbey, and was assigned his work task: to assist the elder monks in copying the church's documents. On his first day of work, he noticed that the other monks were copying from other copies of the manuscripts - not from the original texts. This troubled him, so he went to speak to the Head Abbot, a very quiet and dignified old monk.
"You see, Mon Senior", the young monk explained, "if a mistake was made in the any of the master copies, that error would be perpetuated in the latter copies."
"That's the way we've done it for centuries", replied the Head Abbot, "but you make a valid point. The originals are kept in the catacombs under the abbey. I'll go down and check them out."
The Abbot was gone for several hours and the young monk began to get worried about him, so he went down into the dark catacombs in search of the Abbot. He finally found him in a dark corner, banging his head against the stone wall and crying out "They left out the R! They left out the R!"
The young monk ran to the old man, pulled him onto a nearby chair, and began mopping his bloody forehead with his own shawl. "What's the matter?" asked the young monk.
"They left out the R!" sobbed the old Abbot with tears in his eyes as he looked up at the young man.
"What are you talking about?" the junior monk asked.
"The word was suppose to be CELEBRATE!"
