tidbit of trivia

In case you didn't already know this little tidbit of trivia, it might make you chuckle when you read it.

ON JULY 20, 1969, AS COMMANDER OF THE APOLLO 11 LUNAR MODULE,
NEIL ARMSTRONG WAS THE FIRST PERSON TO SET FOOT ON THE MOON.

HIS FIRST WORDS AFTER STEPPING ON THE MOON, "THAT'S ONE SMALL STEP FOR MAN, ONE GIANT LEAP FOR MANKIND," WERE TELEVISED TO EARTH AND HEARD BY MILLIONS.

BUT JUST BEFORE HE RE-ENTERED THE LANDER, HE MADE THE ENIGMATIC REMARK "GOOD LUCK, MR. GORSKY".

MANY PEOPLE AT NASA THOUGH IT WAS A CASUAL REMARK CONCERNING SOME RIVAL SOVIET COSMONAUT.

HOWEVER, UPON CHECKING, THERE WAS NO GORSKY IN EITHER THE RUSSIAN OR AMERICAN SPACE PROGRAMS.

OVER THE YEARS MANY PEOPLE QUESTIONED ARMSTRONG AS TO WHAT THE 'GOOD LUCK, MR. GORSKY' STATEMENT MEANT, BUT ARMSTRONG ALWAYS JUST SMILED.

ON JULY 5, 1995, IN TAMPA BAY , FLORIDA , WHILE ANSWERING QUESTIONS FOLLOWING A SPEECH, A REPORTER BROUGHT UP THE 26-YEAR-OLD QUESTION TO ARMSTRONG. THIS TIME HE FINALLY RESPONDED.

MR. GORSKY HAD DIED, SO NEIL ARMSTRONG FELT HE COULD NOW ANSWER THE QUESTION.

IN 1938, WHEN HE WAS A KID IN A SMALL MID-WESTERN TOWN , HE WAS PLAYING BASEBALL WITH A FRIEND IN THE BACKYARD. HIS FRIEND HIT THE BALL, WHICH LANDED IN HIS NEIGHBOUR'S YARD, BY THEIR BEDROOM WINDOW. HIS NEIGHBOURS' WERE MR. AND MRS. GORSKY AND AS HE LEANED DOWN TO PICK UP THE BALL, YOUNG ARMSTRONG HEARD MRS. GORSKY SHOUTING AT MR. GORSKY.

"SEX! YOU WANT SEX? YOU'LL GET SEX WHEN THE KID NEXT DOOR WALKS ON THE MOON!"

Except he flubbed the "one step" comment... what he really said was:

"That's one small step for a man; one giant leap for mankind."

I think Neil might have ben under as much, or more, stress than Mr. Gorsky was.
IMHO.

I don't know Seann. The Snopes website seems to disagree with you that it's a true story. It is funny, though.

Snopes.com: Good Luck, Mr. Gorsky!

I am reading First Man right now which is the only book that Neil Armstrong ever was involved in. Here is a paragraph from this book:

As a story, “Mr. Gorsky” always gets a laugh, which was what comedian Buddy Hackett was counting on when he first delivered the joke (which Hackett apparently invented) on NBC’s Tonight Show sometime around1990. In spite of the ease with which the story can be debunked, and in spite of various attempts on the Internet (a search for “Armstrong” and “Gorsky” generates 4,000 hits) to expose it for the urban legend that it has become, the story is funny enough that countless people continue to read it and pass it along, no matter its origin. “There is absolutely no truth to it. I even heard Hackett tell the story at a charity golf outing.”

Hansen, James R. (2005-10-18). First Man (pp. 633-634). Simon & Schuster. Kindle Edition.

The last sentence is a quote from Neil Armstrong.

It is a good story however.

Yes, it is the joke page! But, I'm not knocking the joke; just setting the record straight for that last line in your posting that says

"TRUE STORY"
