Where am I?

For You Navigator Buffs. Happy New Year!
The passenger steamer SS Warrimoo was quietly knifing its way through the waters of the mid-Pacific on its way from Vancouver to Australia.
The navigator had just finished working out a star fix and brought the master, Captain John Phillips, the result.
The Warrimoo's position was latitude 0 degrees x 31 minutes north and longitude 179 degrees x 30 minutes west. The date was 31 December 1899.
"Know what this means?" First Mate Payton broke in, "we're only a few miles from the intersection of the Equator and the International Date Line ".
Captain Phillips was prankish enough to take full advantage of the opportunity for achieving the navigational freak of a lifetime.
He called his navigators to the bridge to check and double check the ships position. He changed course slightly so as to bear directly on his mark.
Then he adjusted the engine speed. The calm weather and clear night worked in his favor.
At midnight the Warrimoo lay on the Equator at exactly the point where it crossed the International Date Line!
The consequences of this bizarre position were many. The forward part of the ship was in the Southern Hemisphere and the middle of summer.
The stern was in the Northern Hemisphere and in the middle of winter.
The date in the aft part of the ship was 31 December 1899. Forward it was 01 January 1900.
This ship was therefore not only in two different days, two different months, two different seasons and two different years, but in two different centuries, all at the same time.

Where you were!

Wow - that, Seann, was terrific! Apropos of nothing - or perhaps your post - U/W en route Singapore, circa August 1970, on CGC YAKUTAT, our XO advised crew we'd be crossing Equator in 30 sec. Quick as I could, called bridge, recommended we just turned wheel hard left upon crossing equator, continue to hold hard until WE'D CROSSED equator N>S, S>N, N>S and again S>N, - THEREFORE, crossing equator multiple times, thereby according us greater status in the order of the Ancient Mariner Order of (Shellbacks? - I forget) and affording each of us opportunity to initiate, rather than "participate" in offering King Neptune "tribute" . Regardless my sea story, I'm sure most sailors, let alone others, never have the experience of crossing the Dateline and Equator simultaneously. Again, great observation.

The Order of Neptune.

All Pollywogs are brought before King Neptune to answer the charges brought against them.

If a baby were born on a passenger plane New Years Day west of the date line heading east and the plane tragically crashed after it crossed would the tomb stone read "Born Jan. 1 2017- Died December 31 2016?
Sorry I couldn't resist.

If a plane crashes on the U.S.A. - Canada border... where do they bury the survivors?

Became a Golden Shellback back in the Spring of 2001 on our way back from Australia after a 6 month deployment to the Gulf. Was one of the few highlights of a cruise that had us sailing past every port possible. We were at sea so long we had two steel beach picnics in a row without pulling in. It was my first cruise and we had Senior Chiefs and Master Chiefs with 20+ years telling us this was the worst cruise they had ever been on for port visits.

Funny thing is that I now work a nice office job a short drive from home with tons of vacation, but for some reason part of me still misses it, especially working on the Flight Deck.

Depends on who "they" are. I prefer to bury the dead.
