Great my aunt Fanny. Ask the French about what happened to their fleet in WWII. Ask the Irish about the Black and Tans he sent over to terrorize Ireland.

The french are not speaking German today, so that has to count for something.

Yep after France signed an armistice with Germany, giving Germany control of ports, passports etc, England voted to sink the French Fleet before the Germans could use them in the war effort....seems prudent to me.

As to Ireland, yes the Trans and Black were sent to end the nazi influence there. They could of sent British troops but, that would only give the IRA a great advantage in the public relations war.

Both of these show great courage and were smart and were the right decisions for Britain during a war for their existence.

He was and is still considered the best Prime Minister in Britain's history.
The right man at the right time.

That has little to do with France, much to do with the British and Americans.

You need to bone up on your history. Churchill decided to sink the fleet even though the French Navy had tried to assure him they would sink their own fleet before letting the Germans have access to it. Even though the French Army was in shambles at the time, the French Navy was still in pretty good shape and in no actual danger of falling to the Germans. Churchill's decision was pure cowardice. No armistice giving control of the ports to the Germans had been signed at the time.

The criminals Churchill recruited from prisons and other thugs that comprised the Black and Tans (not Trans and Blacks, as you said), so called because of the mixed color uniforms scarfed up at the last minute, were sent into Ireland in 1918 during the Irish War of Independence, long before the Nazi's were ever a presence in Ireland, let alone a threat. Their cowardly savage treatment of innocent Irish citizens were far more of a detriment to English public relations than British regulars would have been and most likely contributed to the success of the Irish gaining partial independence from England.

Jeanie I understand history, and, I have no agenda. And this certainly NOT the forum to discuss history and why leaders did what they did. He was an amazing man, who did what he had to do to protect his nation. His wit is well known, and was the focus of the thread, until it was hijacked with an irrelevant post.

I love his wit and his wisdom.

Yes the thread is about his wit and humor, not to debate any possibly controversial decisions made by the man during a world war.

And if someone said Joseph Stalin was a great man, would you keep silent?

Another of his words of wisdom.

You have enemies? Good. That means you have stood up for something sometime in your life.

A Pessimist sees the difficulty in every opportunity; an optimist sees the opportunity in ever difficulty
