Have a newbie question you NASCAR fans may be able to help me with.
I follow and attend a different race series and I am interested in your opinions on race scanners and headsets since they seem to enhance a race experience, imo.
Thoughts on Race Raidos and Race electronics as they offer packages for scanners and headsets and of course you can build your own package.
I’m looking for something mid level ,easy to use and comfortable to wear
What are the must have accessories and what to avoid. Any brand advice would be welcome.
Thanks

Years ago (at least 15 I would say) my wife bought me a Radio Shack Pro-89 Race Scanner. It worked awesome at the track. I don't know if anything is produced similar to it now.

It has been several years since I've been to a race and I'm not sure of they have changed anything it the frequencies they would use.

Uniden Bearcat BC 80XLT is a great scanner an less expensive than the Racing Electronics. Its nit as small as what they have out now but its a great little unit. Unless you know the drivers voices I recommend a 80 channel minimum that way you can program by car number.
As for headsets that's your call. We have a set with a microphone so the wife an I can talk to each other without removing the headset. I received them as a gift an would not have spent the money for them. But don't spend $50 for a set of headgear an expect it to be very comfortable.
Like everything else these radios are all about what you want to spend on bills and whistles an how much you'll use it. I can recommend one thing an someone else would say oh heck no get this one.

Thank you both for the info. Still trying to gage the value of “tuneing in”
I follow the IMSA series and go to about 7 races a year. I never considered a scanner but at Road Atlanta this year met an old friend who worked for one of the GTD teams and spent a day with one of the team sets listening in on all the chatter and race control .It opened up a different experience for me and now I’m considering a scanner/headset for the upcoming season. IMSA uses Raceing Raidos as their “official” series set. They use uniden scanners and an over head or behind head headset. I’ve got plenty of hours using over the head type headsets as a retired pilot never used a behind the head set though.
Some scanners seem to require an advanced degree to program and use I’m hoping to keep it simple. Thanks for your insights.

There's nothin to setting up a scanner but you'll find after maybe 30 minutes into a race you'll start blocking drivers out. I woukd say by half way thru a race when there was 43 drivers I was down to maybe 15. Last 1/4 of the race I was down to maybe 5 or 6. Once you set one up with the frequencies you'll get the hang of it. Just make sure you get a good frequency sheet. It'll have any were from 1-4 channels the teams use. Good thing is unless they go from channel 1 to 2 or 3 they stay the same all yr amd most times for years.

If I can remember where I get my sheet I'll send the link. There not hard to find on google. Again, make sure u see 1-3 or 4 channels for some teams or don't bother
