I have NEVER been a JJ fan, even after he married one of my high school classmates daughter. He has always come across as arrogant, self serving and Jeff Gordonish since day one. And I believe to this day he intentionally wrecked certain drivers, in spite of what his "handler" Chad said.

Beyond his personality, the #48 team has been involved in some of the biggest cheating fines and crew chief suspensions in recent memory. Some of those came during his supposed championship years.

I think of him as the Barry Bonds of NASCAR. The records need to have an asterisk beside them.

A Letter of Thanks from Coach Gibbs:

Two weeks ago, I was fortunate to be honored with induction into the NASCAR Hall of Fame. I’ve often said that you win with people and certainly an honor such as this only comes from the hard work and efforts of so many around you. As I mentioned in my speech that night Joe Gibbs Racing starts with the Gibbs family. In our formative years that included Joe, Pat, J.D. and Coy. Today Coy and I oversee the race team and our family has grown to include our daughters-in-law Melissa and Heather as well as our eight grandkids. I had the opportunity to mention a few people in my speech that night, but I want to use this opportunity to recognize and thank several others.
When our family began to pursue the dream of starting a race team, we asked our friend Don Meredith to help. Don and I teamed up on several other ventures and he would play a key role in forming JGR, agreeing to oversee the business side of our race team in those formative years. Thank you, Don, for your devoted friendship.
The key to forming a race team is attracting a sponsor and we were fortunate to wind up on the doorstep of Interstate Batteries with our dream. Norm and Tommy Miller took a big risk partnering with us and we are proud of the relationship we’ve built over the past three decades that continues today with Scott Miller and everyone at Interstate Batteries. If it wasn’t for Norm and Tommy saying, “let’s do this,” our dream would never have become reality.

Of course, Interstate Batteries was just our first partner. One of the things I love about our sport of NASCAR is the relationships we have the opportunity to create. We can’t list every partner that has contributed to our dream over the years, and I won’t try, but I hope all our partners realize how much we value the relationships we’ve built with each of them.

In that initial year we were able to convince Jimmy Makar to oversee our racing program and we owe a lot to him and the 17 other employees that contributed from our first day.

That startup year also saw the arrival of J.D. He would work in nearly every department of our operations before eventually becoming President. J.D. devoted his entire professional life into building JGR. Dave Alpern arrived shortly after J.D. and became a key figure in our front office overseeing various business and marketing efforts and when J.D. was no longer able to lead JGR he agreed to take over the role of President. Dave’s loyalty, wisdom, and dedication over the years has meant so much.

During those founding years we were so fortunate to persuade Cindy Mangum to come on board to assist our family and she has also played a key role in building JGR and our entire family owes so much to her. Thank you for all you’ve done for us Cindy.
On the business side Dean Noble came on board to help acquire sponsorship and now handles our business to business efforts. I want to thank him for more than 22 years of loyal service.
On our financial side I want to thank our current CFO Tim Carmichael as well as Vince Cline, Larry Kobelia and Paul Kraus; all of whom have provided their support throughout the years.

In addition, we have several front office department heads that play key roles for us:
Steve DeSouza, Mike York, Craig Greene, Chris Helein, Heath Cherry, JJ Damato, Bryan Cook, Toni Rogers, Byron Goggin, and Roger Phillips. Thanks, gang, for your devotion.

We have so many key players that are focused on making us go fast. In the early years Todd Meredith would ultimately lead our operations side and provided JGR with 24 years of dedicated service.
Today, Todd Bowland and Wally Brown oversee our valued personnel in charge of race car development and assist our crew chiefs with race strategy. Mark Cronquist developed our engine program and he has received many awards over the years and his loyal friendship means so much to us. Thank you to each of them and everyone in their departments.

The goal of my letter is to thank all those that have played key roles throughout our history in building JGR. Even in this format I find it impossible. There are so many that have contributed to our success. In fact, we have 35 current employees that have contributed more than 20 years of their lives to making JGR the success it is today. I want to say thank you to each of them, to the more than 500 current employees we have and to the many more that have contributed to our success of the past 29 years. It truly takes a team and while I often get shoved out front and given credit for our success it really comes from all those in the background believing in what we are trying to do and making the sacrifices necessary to be successful.

Most people don’t have the opportunity to experience even one dream in their lives and I’ve been blessed with the opportunity to live out two. And in both, football and racing, I’ve been fortunate to have so many great people by my side in my life. Thank you to everyone who has been part of it.
Joe Gibbs

In appreciation, I close with a list of all our employees that have been with us for 20+ years:

Agreed. Have been a fan since his early Redskins days, in his first season the team began 0-5 but he turned it around fast and won three Super Bowls with mediocre QBs. I know his drivers are not the most popular, but Coach Gibbs is for sure a class act.
