a stuck GMC MH, topless women and ROTC cadets
I saw a picture of an old GMC motorhome and it reminded me of a story from my youth.
In the mid 80's when I was in high school, my father's national guard unit was tasked to take 25 or so ROTC cadets to Padre Island for a 3 night bivoac. The ROTC students were from Texas A&M Kingsville (A&I back then) and they met up in Corpus where my dad's unit was tasked to move them to an area a few miles south of the Padre Island National Seashore building (where Park Road 22 ends). We loaded up in two M35A2 "duce and halves" and I got to ride shotgun with my dad driving one of the trucks. With the students in the back (a miserable ride as I would find out in my later years in the Army) we made the hour or so drive to last set of buildings where we stopped, used the bathrooms and rolled up the canvas sides on the trucks before heading further south. We drove past the "4WD only" sign were the loose sand offered a bit of a challenge but the 6x6 M35's made good headway. We passed a few topless ladies that seemed to get everyone's attention and an drove past a nice GMC motorhome that seemed to be out of place that far south of where the pavement ends.
We dropped off the students and waited around for a bit as they set up camp then loaded up and headed home. A short while later we ran into that GMC MH again only this time it was completely stuck in some loose sand. One of the NCO's driving the other duce stopped to see if the GMC driver needed help. The MH occupants were two couples....and low and behold the two ladies that were topless were in the MH but this time a little more dressed. Luckily for the GMC driver, one of the M35's had a winch and we were able to pull him out quickly and at no cost to him but he was a bit embarrassed about the whole incident.
My dad has long forgot that day but it still lives in my memory and one day I'll share this story with my son...lol! Thanks, dad!
