Angry Another F250 6.0 disaster

Well the turbo in our f250 let go this weekend. Anyone else had problems with their 6.0 Diesel? As many problems as Ford has had with these engines, youd think there should have been a recall. We bought this truck used, last November. Changed the oil in it once and bam $7000 was the estimate to have the turbo rebuild. The mechanic said it should last another 75 or 100,000 miles after its rebuilt. I told him thats not much of a sunny outlook.

Wish I could help you but don't own a Ford. I can however recommend http://www.thedieselstop.com/ as a place to post what's happened and see what feedback you get. I'm a member of the Dodge / ***mins diesel forum and there's lots of discussion there and I'm sure you'll find the same with Ford owners. You'll have to register but that's a little thing in order to get some good advice.

Sorry but we have the F-150. Has done well even on the grades crossing California to the Midwest for two trips back and forth. But our tt is only about 6500lb loaded. Hope all works out for you

The biggest destroyer of turbos is people shutting the truck off after a long hard pull. You have to let it cool down for a few min.

Sorry for your misfortune barrelslime. As a past owner of the 6.0L powerstroke I went through five turbos in 59k miles under warranty. Even with long Idle periods after towing or not.

As a mechanic and who works on busses that have the 6.0 and the 6.4 , these 2 Ford diesels are known for all sorts of problems , from EGR cooler leaks , fuel injectors and yes turbos , the new 2011 Fords have a new redesign diesel, we will see what the future brings with them , as for the 6.0 and the 6.4 good luck if you have one .

Don just reminded me of the F250 Powerstroke diesel we had back in the mid-90's. It was a 7.3(?). We didn't have probs with it. The one memory I do have was that it had a very rough/stiff ride. Sorry to hear the later model diesels have problems. Let us know how the feedback goes with the diesel forum

The 7.3 was a great engine, the school district I work for has a few with almost 200,000 miles , but do to emissions the 7.3 was put to rest by Ford , and the 6.0 was born . After the problems with the 6.0 they came out with a redesigned diesel , the 6.4 . All 3 engines, the 7.3 , 6.0 , and the 6.4 were made by International , after the problems with the 6.0 and the 6.4 Ford and International parted ways due to all the problems . The new Ford 6.7 diesel was all Ford design and I hope its better then the last two.

Well heres a update on the truck. The turbo was only part of the problem. Come to find out the head gaskets are going as well. The truck goes into the shop next week for a procedure I shouldnt talk about here, but all should be fixed soon.

Geez... I have always been a Ford truck fan and my wife and I have been considering upgrading our F150 to a diesel F250. Based on this thread I doubt we will make this move now. I hope when you get your truck back it purrs like a kitten and last you for a long long time. Thanks for sharing.

Hondo as far as I know the gas motors have never had any major problems. the newer 6.4 diesels arent any better than the 6.0's, and the 6.4 mileage is horable. As mentioned maybe the new ones will get it together. I do believe the new head gaskets and removal of the emmisson controls will make life much better

I have an 08 and no problems with 30,000 miles (knock on wood) We have pulled our Designer or Cardinal about 18.000 of the 30.000 miles.

Sorry to hear about your problems with the 6.0 PSD. Agree with earlier post that you can learn a lot more about this issue at http://www.thedieselstop.com . You might also check out http://www.powerstroke.org for more info on your specific engine. Most folks love their older 7.3 PSD; the 6.0 PSD had a lot of problems with head gasket leaks and turbo burnout (EGR emiisions valve allowing coolant leak to gunk up the oil cooler and turbo). I almost bought a used 2006 6.0 PSD King Ranch, but lost my nerve after researching the engine history.

Many 6.0 PSD owners seem to make the following modifications: have a mechanic tack weld the EGR valve (emmision pressure regulator) closed; replace the weaker head studs with high performance (racing) grade (not cheap); and then add a performance chip for higher fuel mileage and torque.

I finally bought a used 2008 6.4 PSD F250 a few months ago in anticipation of upgrading from our pop-up to a larger bunkhouse TT. I love my F250 and it has more than enough power to tow our G2 32BHDS. Fuel mileage is less than desired thanks to the newer emission requirements: 16mpg highway; 12mpg city; and 10-12mpg towing the new trailer.

This is what we are having done. They still have it 2 weeks now. DW wife is getting agrivated cause we cant camp again this weekend

Finally got the truck back from the shop and we are gonna hook it up and get back to camping this weekend.. So far so good. No problems and she is running great. Hope it stays that way..

One a recent trip to the Smokies, we had to replace the radiator on our 6.4 F250. Sure glad it was still under warrenty. Also, while on the trip, the trailer brake module went out.

I have a 2000 F-250 7.3 that will hit 250,000 miles, over 100,000 towing, this week. Every 5,000 miles I change oil and filter. Every 25,000 miles I have changed the air filter, fuel filter and transmission oil/filter.

To date, besides routine repairs such as brakes shoes etc, I have replaced the alternator twice, the left front wheel bearing, and $600 worth of front end work. At 8 years old and about 200,000 miles, as preventative maintenance, I replaced the serpentine belt and all water hoses. Still has the original transmission, air conditioner etc. Dependent upon speed, I get 15-17 MPG not towing and average 11.4 towing. My tow speed is 64 MPH which is 1,750 RPM and seems to be the sweet spot on this diesel. California's & other states 55MPH costs me almost 2 MPG towing. The lower RPM causes much earlier downshifting climbing hills which kills the MPG.

I am very pleased with my F250 Diesel, also the Designer. In fact, trying to talk my wife into Alaska next summer and would not hesitate to head out in the 2000 Ford. I have not heard more bad than good comments out of any of the subsequent to 7.3 Ford Diesels.

I have a friend who had a 7.3 and he like you has not had any problems, but then again it is a completely diffrent animal from the 6.0.
