Served 6 years as a cook in a reserve general hospital unit. The memories that that had the most impact was when I served severely wounded soldiers on the hospital ward. No one "likes" a cook but when I was personally delivering the food to their bedside I was reminded each moment of how lucky we all are. I remember one soldier in particular who literally had "matter" extruding from his skull. The few days when I delivered the food to him; the largest smile and gratitude. He was someone who appreciated every moment of his life. This was during the Vietnam war and being in the military (even just the 4 months of basic training, 2 weeks active around the U.S. every year) shaped my views for the rest of my life. It is criminal how we treat our vets and I am grateful that we seem to be paying better attention these last few years.

1987-2008, U.S. Army. 21 years of incredible experiences, wouldn't trade them for the world. BUT...glad my days of moving around so frequently are over, it's tough on a family. It's been nice to be able to put down roots.

I retired from the Army Reserve with 27 years of service, however, I'm not a Vet. In all those years I never served the correct consecutive number days on "active duty" to qualify as a Vet.

Never heard that, I know I had to do a certain # of training days annually and active duty to get credit for a year in the reserves. What is the requirement?

Quotes from three different Government publications.

“Under federal law, a veteran is any person who served honorably on active duty in the armed forces of the United States.”

“Members of the National Guard and Reserves may be considered veterans if they were deployed under Title 10 (Federal Orders) and complete that deployment and are issued a DD-214 (discharge) under honorable conditions.”

“Generally, you must have 90 days or 24 months of active service (depending on when you served) to qualify.”

I was never deployed, or served 90 days or more on active service, thus not a Vet.

Shorty, I served 6 years in the Reserves and also believed I was not a Vet. The VA corrected me. They stated that we are Vet's but we are not entitled to Veterans benefits.
