Almost 22 years, both active and Army National Guard. Retired less than a month ago, last day of October. The military was great to me as a Signal Warrant Officer.

I served 8 years in the Navy (1982 - 1990) as an EM1 which is
"Petty Officer 1st class Electricians Mate".
Stationed in Guam, Long Beach California and Seattle Washington.
My time in the service was probably the most influential period of my life.
I got to see parts of the world that I never thought I would see and met some great friends.
Thank You to ALL VETERANS and FAMILY MEMBERS!!

As I think about the day, I want to especially say thank you to those who came before me. I had many great mentors who taught me what it meant to be a Soldier. Some fought in wars, some did not. All did everything the Army asked of them and lead by example.

Well said, so I will quote:
"As I think about the day, I want to especially say thank you to those who came before me. I had many great mentors who taught me what it meant to be a Soldier. Some fought in wars, some did not. All did everything the Army asked of them and lead by example. "

I never was and do have pangs of regret. When I came out of college I decided I wanted to be a police officer or Marine. If I didn't get hired by the police, I would join the Corps (Happy 241st Birthday yesterday!!!). I was already pretty far along in the process on 9/11, or else I may have switched positions and joined.
Thank you to all our men and women in uniform. God bless you, God bless America. I hope that you all make it home safe to your families at the end of your tours!

I believe that life gives us choices, some of which eliminate other choices, and that we should not look back but enjoy what God has provided.
Be safe out there. It seems that being in a police uniform is more risky than ever.

United States Marine Corps, April 1984 - May 31, 2010.
Thank you all who served and are serving for your service and self sacrifice.
Since yesterday was our Birthday, I will share a few of my favorite quotes:
"Marines are about the most peculiar breed of human beings I have ever witnessed. They treat their service as if it was some kind of cult, plastering their emblem on almost everything they own, making themselves up to look like insane fanatics with haircuts to ungentlemanly lengths, worshiping their Commandant almost as if he was a god, and making weird animal noises like a band of savages. They'll fight like rabid dogs at the drop of a hat just for the sake of a little action, and are the cockiest SOB's I have ever known. Most have the foulest mouths and drink well beyond man's normal limits, but their high spirits and sense of brotherhood set them apart and , generally speaking, of the United States Marines I've come in contact with, are the most professional soldiers and the finest men I have had the pleasure to meet."
~ An Anonymous Canadian Citizen
“I’m going to plead with you, do not cross us. Because if you do, the survivors will write about what we do here for 10,000 years.” Gen. James “Mad Dog" Mattis, USMC
"There are only two kinds of people that understand Marines: Marines and the enemy. Everyone else has a second-hand opinion."
Gen. William Thornson, U.S. Army
"I have just returned from visiting the Marines at the front, and there is not a finer fighting organization in the world!"
General of the Armies Douglas MacArthur; Korea, 21 September 1950
"Some people spend an entire lifetime wondering if they made a difference in the world. But, the Marines don't have that problem."
Ronald Reagan, President of the United States; 1985
"You cannot exaggerate about the Marines. They are convinced to the point of arrogance, that they are the most ferocious fighters on earth- and the amusing thing about it is that they are."
Father Kevin Keaney,1st Marine Division Chaplain
"The Marines I have seen around the world have the cleanest bodies, the filthiest minds, the highest morale, and the lowest morals of any group of animals I have ever seen. Thank God for the United States Marine Corps!"
Eleanor Roosevelt, First Lady of the United States, 1945
Semper Fi, Happy Birthday Marines

I am not a veteran. However, I still feel like I did my duty as I was eligible for the draft during the Viet Nam conflict. I managed to get a high draft lottery number.
