Bad day towing a trailer

Two tractor trailers capsized on the Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel yesterday after a severe T-storm rolled through. One almost went over the side. I would not like to have been on that bridge towing my trailer when this happened, with or without sway control!:

I have always enjoyed driving over the Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel, but I would not have wanted to have been there during that storm!

Amazing the power of wind. Imagine what could happen to a travel trailer! Thanks for sharing Lee

something to think about when driving during storms and high winds.
Do they shut the baybridge tunnel down during storms?

Sorry, I can't answer your question but, in comparison, I'd be more concerned when crossing The William Preston Lane Jr. Memorial Bridge that carries US-50 & US-301 in over the Chesapeake Bay in Maryland. You're about 200 feet above water at its highest point (clearance for ships is 186 feet) when on the suspension bridge. I've crossed that bridge a number of times with and without the TT. Fortunately, I've never had to cross during any severe weather conditions.

They have wind restrictions with different levels, at times large profile vehicles and anything towing a trailer or with open cargo will not be allowed across. The stronger the prevailing winds, the higher the restriction level. Hurricanes and such the bridge would close completely. You just have to sit tight in a rest area until the wind subsides. The problem with a T storm is the wind comes up so suddenly, and the CBBT is over 20 miles in total length of bridges, tunnels and islands. Something like this is a rare occurrence. A car did go through the rail a few months back and plunge to the bottom.

AHHH yes, the Bay Bridge. One of my least favorites. I get a funny feeling in my gut whenever I drive across that one, which is fairly often since I have some relatives near DC.

If you travel it that often, you must have an E-ZPASS! I have one and find it worth its weight in gold; especially when towing.

I'll assume you've dragged trailers over that bridge.
