Sad to say, I've seen that happen live onboard a US Naval vessel. It is EXTREMELY LOUD! I was actually counting the fathom markings as they went past. The 2nd to last length of chain is painted Yellow. The last section is painted red. When you see the yellow coming out at the speed, run. Just run... Each section of chain between the markings is 6 fathoms.

A Captain will loose his job for loosing an anchor like that.

And we think its bad to lose brakes on a trailer....Yikes. I suspect that brakeman had to change his shorts after that episode.

Never been on a ship, but 20 years of moored semi sub drilling rigs, 105 lbs a link, usually 4000' feet of it per leg, 8-12 legs, and another 12000' of wire behind that. When it goes, it can get exciting quick. As Steve said, RUN, or in our case, duck in the control cab. Nothing you can do once brakes are glazed and it's on the run.

At first I thought that was you and your boys on a new super large crab boat.

Back in my Coast Guard days, the patrol boat I was on, we were setting up to tow a disabled fishing boat south of Long Island. This was during a storm and as our towline was being fed out off the reel, the boatswain at the tow bit lost control of the towline while our boat was coming off a large ocean swell. We carried 2,000 feet of 4" double braided nylon line. We had 1,750 of it out when he was about to secure it to the bit. The remaining 250' came off the reel so fast and the bitter end of the line whipped the boatswain in the the leg and broke it. It sounded like a shotgun. He was airlifted off the cutter and was out of work for about a year. It was a scary incident but a big eye opener.

I knew there was a reason to be below deck and not topside.
