Bike Rack/Hitch Fiasco

One of my challenges to downsizing to the Jayco 17Z was the need to devise a manner in which to carry four bicycles. With our old motorhome I carried two on the back of the coach and two on the back of the towed (toad) Geo Tracker.

I checked out a dual receiver adapter which provides a second receiver tube for a bike rack over the towing receiver, but there is insufficent clearence for this to work with my trailer.

Next, I decided to go the Thule route based on their quality racks and carriers and ordered from a dealer with a large internet presence. This was going to be the roof rack and four individual bike racks to mount to the Thule crossbars. Actually putting the bikes on the roof of the van would be another bridge to cross but I figured I’d do that when the time came. I ordered the entire system, which totaled over $800 well in advance of our first outing. After waiting for almost three weeks and being told the actual bike rail mounts were still out of stock, I instructed the company to scrap the order and issue a refund.

My next attempt thus far has proved to be equally futile and unbelievable. I discovered that Hidden Hitch makes a front mount receiver for the van and this might permit use of my Thule Parkway bike carrier. I placed my order and had been anxiously checking on the shipping status via UPS tracking.

UPS made the delivery yesterday while I was at work. My son informed me of what transpired. The UPS man was suspicious that the rather large box felt very light. He opened it in the presence of my son and low and behold the box I had been tracking was empty. That’s right empty. They shipped an empty box that was supposed to weigh 42 lbs!

Six telephone calls later between UPS and the supplier in an attempt to determine what the deal was, I scrapped the order and requested a refund.

I found another manufacturer’s product, and a retailer who said I should have it by the time I need it. I’ll hold my breath and wait. Hopefully, it won’t be another empty box. I won’t be surprised though if it turns out to be the wrong receiver hitch!

Sorry for the long post, but I had to vent!

I welded 3" tube steel from "I" beam to "I" beam at the back of the trailer, then welded a 2" receiver to the tube steel and use a Yakimal 4 bike 2" receiver system. Looks like it's welded to the bumper but it's far more strong.

If this doesn't work out for you let me know I'll give you more details. Good Luck!
