Wow, thanks for all the input. We have driven coast to coast evermy year for the past six years. No problems, but this year we are going to New England and I'm still having nightmares from our last trip through Jersey and the GWB. I 'll check out these other recommendations . Thanks to all.

How about the Jersey Turnpike to 287,then 87 to Newburgh NY, then 84 to Danberry CT ? Has anyone driven that route? OK?

You can certainly go that route. On our last trip to Virginia, I made the horrible mistake of taking the GWB to save an hour cost me 2.5 hours JUST on the GWB!
The Turnpike can get congested as well so it will really depend on the time of day that you are traveling through the area. Once you hit Danbury, really the only traffic is between 5 and 6pm, and even then it isn't bad.

Sage. Click on the google map that I replied with last message. That contains that exact route. It's a little steep after the bridge but a nice easy ride into CT without the expensive tolls of the NYC area. There is a small toll on 87N which is the NYS Thruway System. Once you cross the Hudson it's pretty much free and clear. There are very limited stops on 84E for fuel after about 10 miles or so after the bridge. NJ is the cheapest state here in the NE area to buy fuel so do so before leaving the state. That should get you to your destination without having to get off and fuel up. NYS Thruway will have an easy fill up spot as well before the bridge.

ABSOLUTELY! Jersey is not a little less, but A LOT less and it's full service only. New York is going to have some of the higher fuel costs, so fill up in Jersey, or wait until CT.

Ok, got it figured out, going Jersey tpk to 287, then will loop around to Neuburg,NY, then 84 toDanbery CT. That will get me out of a lot of the traffic. Thank you all for your suggestions.

You've got the NYC and CT part down. DC to 278 can be a bad stretch too. Depending on where in DC you are going you might want to get to 81N or 83N as suggested. That stretch of 95 is one of the worst in America as far as I am concerned. It also is one the most expensive especially towing. You will pay in DC for a bridge, Baltimore for tunnels, Delaware for the DMBBridge then the NJ Turnpike for almost it's entire stretch. Probaly well north of $100.00 in all. The southern NJT is only currently 2 lanes in each direction and highly traveled to get the Jersey Shore and AC points in the summer months. The only way to avoid IMHO is drive in the dark then you have a shot. Otherwise you will pick up about 2+ hours in that stretch if you hit it wrong and the window is small.

NJ turnpike does not go to 287. Need to jump on Garden State Parkway or Rt. 17 north. The 84 suggestions are a nice route. But , if you are watching fuel econ, Rt. 95 through Ct is way better. Less hilly. If you jump to the Garden State you have the option if heading to 84, Newburg, or going to 287 and heading to Tappen Zee. You can stop on GSP at the last rest stop and check traffic on internal. Rest stop about 5 miles before you need to decide.

287 intersects 95N (NJT) at exit 10, the outerbridge 440 crossing. East goes to Staten Island, w goes around the entire metro area in the equivalent of a bypass loop and intersects 87N.
Also no PARKWAYS IN NYS for commecial vehicles, trailers or high profile vehicles! It's the law and there are very low overpasses. That is our downfall and a confusing road rule for out of state drivers in NYS. Most surrounding states allow it, i.e. NJ and PA.
There are several in and around the NYC area that you pass depending on how you go.
95 is more flat and along the coast but the tolls are steeper in passing over the TZbridge and traffic could be present anywhere in that area from Tarrytown, NY to 91N. From there on it's smooth sailing to 395N. So either route is viable and will get you where you need.
