camp lighter

So, what is everyone using for a lighter to light camp fires? I am looking for a better option then the junky disposable stick lighters. Something that I can refill. Any suggestion?

I have been using the wind resistant lighters, but they don't work very well. I have not found a "long" lighter that works well. They start out ok, then ...

I use a Benz-O-matic torch for all my fire lighting. Charcoal chimney works best for grills.

After a night of camping, I use a 4-D air mattress pump to stoke the campfire coals back to life. Amazing what forced O2 can do to embers.

If you fry anything or have any leftover cooking oil, save it in a container. When it comes time to start a fire soak a few paper towels in the old oil and place the soaked towels under your wood. The oil will cause the paper towels to burn slowly. I use this method to start my charcoal grill. I don't use lighter fluid anymore for the BBQ.

I prefer diesel.

Slower and safer burn.

Your local candle store like Yankee Candle should have some of the really good igniters by Zippo. These are metal, not plastic and are refillable.

Talking

I am "old fashioned" I guess. I still use newspaper, kindling, and a match. Ok, maybe 3 or 4 matches.

I get a box of fire starter logs. Cut a small piece off, wrap it in paper, and put some kindling on top of it. That always takes right off.

When I want to show off, and have the time. I build a boy scout 1 match fire. Now I've been around for a while, I use a flint and steel instead of the match.

This method is never used to make coffee.

Fire Starter

They cost a little bit, but a road flare, we stack the wood, light the flare, put into the wood and starts right up! Work especially well with damp wood.
The other ideas are good also, except the gasoline!!

When we don't want a big fire, we use our 'Red Kettle" gas logs fire, lazy, but works under the awning if it is raining.

Happy Camping

Bernz-O-Matic TS-4000 trigger start torch, why mess around? It lights and burns in hurricane force winds, lasts forever and can be used for so many other tasks around the home and shop. I have been running on an "empty" cylinder discarded by someone who had used it on a tabletop grill for almost a year now.

A handy accelerant is made by using an empty square paint can, filling it with sawdust and dumping your brush cleaning solution from the woodshop. Mineral spirits mixed with stain and polyureathane. Lights readily but not wildly dangerous like gasoline or as stinky as diesel.

Well if you are looking for other methods to start a campfire... may I suggest Hand Sanitizer... but beware it burns with a clear flame...

I use the starter logs. Break a couple of small sections off and put them in a couple of different spots. Then I use my Benzo propane torch. Mine isn't one of the automatic trigger ones though. I have to use one of the strikers. After all, we are camping and supposed to be roughing it.

Picked up 6 boxes of fire starter sticks from Wally World for $1 a box on clearance at the end of the season. I'm good to go for the rest of the year!

Give my boy a box of 100 waterproof matches and a couple of Saturday newspapers. About an hour later I generally have a fire, no leftover matches and nothing to read....lol...
