Canada expectations

Hello friends, my family and I are planning a trip to Alaska. We will be traveling during the summer.
My question is what can I expect and be prepared for while traveling thru canada?

Beautiful scenery. What route do you plan to take so others can provide a better response?

Don't take any handguns and clearly disclose any long guns - you wouldn't want to border guards to randomly search you and find any firearms you didn't disclose.

AFAIK, an 'enhanced' driver's license or passport is required. We've used passports for a number of years so I'm not sure what is needed.

Have serial#/registration# for all the items like boats, motors, generators, vehicles (big ticket items). They want to be sure all the stuff you take into Canada leaves with you.

There are rules regarding certain foods as well as beer/wine/liquor.

Be sure your credit card company handles the exchange rate automatically. It was YEARS ago, but we had a problem with one of our credit cards not doing the exchange rate correctly. It's bad enough buying diesel fuel by the 'quart'.

In 2017 Canada has free entry into their national parks. There is a pass you'll need to get before your trip.

Expect to be inspected, too, when you cross into the US.

Expect mosquitoes, too. They call them 'on shore drilling rigs' for a reason.

Canada Alaska travel

My wife and I plus our pooch last summer 2016 traveled from n.w. Wi. to Ak and back. 10,419 miles in 2 months. Our blog has lots of info and pictures of the trip.
bobandlorraineslatestadventure.blogspot.com. All lower case.
I also wrote up the story of our trip for an outdoors newspaper. Both the blog and story have lots of information that maybe you are interested in. I can send you the story as an attachment to an email if you like and maybe answer more of your questions.

Alcan trip

This will be obvious to many having driven through CA/AK, but whatever else you do get a copy of the MILEPOST. This large magazine/Atlas will enhance your trip wonderfully! I think all who've used it will agree. It has virtually mile-by-mile descriptors - not only recommendations on what to see along the way, but invaluable info on campgrounds, possible detours and a myriad other facts. While a relatively recent MILEPOST can be adequate, the newest available is best. Many of my friends pass these on to others because while they're a bit more expensive than your usual Rand McNally, they're well worth the cost if new. A word of caution: though you might say, "well, I have this app or that app", many areas in Canada are so remote, no coverage is available - hard copy needs no connection ! Another admonition, familiarize yourself with the intended route and its location in the book; you'll want to "sticky note" pages even prior to leaving home.

I do know about the Milepost and intend on getting the most recent copy. Everywhere I research talks about the Milepost so it must be a definite.
Our main goal for this trip is to get to Alaska so this time will be mostly driving while in Canada. But will use the Milepost to make priority stops.

Straight from the horse's mouth... er, CBSA's website:

Visitors to Canada

In a nutshell, make sure you have the proper identification for everyone, declare everything, no more than $10,000 per person, stuff like that. It's all outlined completely in the link I provided.

If you're travelling with young children, don't be surprised or offended if the border guard starts asking them questions. This is to make sure they're not being abducted or anything.

Milepost is a must. Even for the Anchorage and Fairbanks areas. Start looking up campgrounds now and start making reservations as soon as possible. There are a couple of state campgrounds which utilize a concessionaire for reservations.
If you find yourself booking through a company called: Great Holiday, make sure you print out and have something physical proving your space number. This company has a really bad reputation up here for switching spaces on reservations or letting someone occupy a reserved space. If you don't show them proof, they will only put you in an overflow area or another space which is most likely less accommodating.
When you have the proof, they get backed into a corner and have to make whomever occupied the space you had reserved, pack up and move out.

X 2 and when they talk to your kids do not say anything just let them speak. If you interrupt you will be taken inside, it's for their safety not yours.

Is the Milepost as definite a have while visiting the Maritime Provinces of Canada as opposed to traveling the vast expanse of western and northwestern Canada?

You can bring more than $10,000. Just be prepared to explain why and that is $ Cdn so do the conversion.

I stand corrected. But since they say it's $10k per person, if you have two adults and two children, can you theoretically have $40k with you?
