Clevis pins and shear bolts

Howdy everyone.

With this recent snowstorm, my thoughts have unfortunately turned to the snowblower.

The Ariens snowthro comes from the factory with shear bolts on the main auger.

My craftsman (I think by MTD) rototiller came with clevis pins on the main shaft.

It got me thinking, are all clevis pins considered "shear" pins?

What's your thoughts? I wanted to order a bulk supply of bolts for the snowblower and pins for the tiller, but other than going with OEM part numbers, I'm afraid I'll end up with some too-strong-in-shear pins.

Thanks in advance

The quick answer is no, there are many many types of steel and they each have a different shear strength.

To the best of my knowledge, clevis pins are not considered shear pins. I also have an Ariens snow blower and will only use the OEM part - replacing belts is way more expensive than the cost of a pin (been there, done that)

yeah the smart way is using the oem shear pins they are designed for your particular equipment. Never use a bolt or clevis pin! If you knock out the gear box you're looking at a high $$$ repair bill.

Thumbs up

Yep, no doubt shear is important.

While doing additional research, I found this OEM pack of shear clevis pins:
http://www.amazon.com/132673-3146R-C.../dp/B004QPHOQI

Obviously, this craftsman machine was sourced by Electrolux, through the Poulan brand stream.

This post was more of a fishing expedition to see if anyone had found a bulk source of shear bolts (or shear clevis pins).

I bought 3 of those 4-packs of pins, and 2 10-packs of shear bolts for the snowblower. Looks like "bulk" will be hard to source.

Just out of curiosity, what surface are you working on that you'll need that many pins? I used to have a stone driveway, and still only went through a couple a year, generally at the beginning of the season before the blower "leveled" everything out.

Unfortunately I've still got a mixture of pavement, gravel, and inch-and-a half stone. The snowblower actually isn't the problem, it's the tiller that I eat pins while breaking ground. I'm just trying to get a lifetime supply, that's all. I'm sick of having to go and get onesies twosies, ya know? And I always seem to use my last shear bolt at about 95% done the job.
