Dog trailer

Thinking about towing the dogs behind a bicycle in one of those little trailers that children normally ride in. I know they make some specifically for dogs. However, I'm going to buy used, and the dog specific ones are kinda rare. The child type are pretty common on Craigslist.

Has anyone used one of these child trailers for dogs? If so, did they work okay? Or did the dogs weasel their way out? The kiddo types seem to seal up with velcro, while the dog designs have zippers.

Our two dogs are about 12-15 lbs ea.

Have not used one for dogs, but I have seen many dogs in them, never have I seen any issues. It might take some training, such a short lease tied to the frame to ensure they wont jump out during the first few rides.

I think it depends on the dog. We had an old sheltie that would ride in a baby stroller. I'd think like all things involving dogs, its the introduction and training. Start off with dog seeing the trailer, pull it around some, then get the dog in it. Move it a little. Eventually you pull the dog around in it before pulling it with a bike. Rewarding goes a long way in making them understand.
My wife competes in agility and it amazes me how dogs go to weaving through poles and crossing a teeter so quickly from never seeing it before.

Agree, it depends on your dogs personality and training. Some breeds won't sit still others are content to watch you.

I have seen people walking them in baby carriages and the kind you depict behind bikes.

Personally, I would be very content to be chauffeured around in a larger one.

We've been thinking about the same thing for our dog. She's about 40lbs.

As far as Flapper's pic, I'd need a bigger dog or more of them.

Flapper does have the best idea. Our dogs are too small however. I went and looked at the very trailer in the picture I posted. It might work for some folk's dogs, but not for mine. There were large gaps left & right behind the seats. If my dogs spotted a squirrel or something similar, they'd be out those gaps in a heartbeat. Also, the seats could not be removed, which took up a good amount of space. I think I'm just gonna have to buy a new one made for dogs. Found a couple on Ebay that were not too expensive.

Please let me know what you get and how it works. Thinking about the same thing for our dogs, but DW is extremely nervous about it. My guess is that we'll end up with about 40lbs worth of dogs - the little guy is still growing into his feet and I'm not sure how heavy he'll end up being.

I live on the Pinellas Trail (side gate goes out to the trail) which runs for 39 miles (St. Pete > Tarpon Springs). I make a 15 mile bike trip just about every day weather permitting. On any given day the regulars (at least 20) ride past with their pups in tow. Some even have those baskets on the back of their bikes with the small dogs in them. I have not seen any decide to try and get out, not saying that they would not, but a lot of them have their dogs harness secured to the trailer. They all seem to like it. Pinellas county has been installing drinking fountains for bikers and at the ground level they have a pet drinking fountain. My cavalier would lay down and go to sleep... the vibrations make him sleepy (going to be 13 this June). You may have to do a little training to get them to cooperate.

These are the two I'm considering. Sold under different names, but seem to be the same item. These do come in different sizes & this is the largest I came across. As cost goes, these are only about $10 more than the used ones I'm finding on Craigslist.

Our standard poodle isn't content to read his pee-mail.... he has to respond to EVERY one of them.
