Ever camped on a battleship?

I know our members have camped in all sorts of locations, but how many on the deck of a battleship?
Last weekend our Troop camped on the deck of the USS Wisconsin in Norfolk. We set up our tents near the aft 16" gun turret. The weekend was Scout oriented, after the Nauticus museum closed for the day the Scouts/leaders/parents were locked in and given a special tour and had the ship to themselves except for the guides. We were treated to a breakfast the next morning in the wardroom. Great trip.

A few more. That door is part of the armored navigational bridge which is 17" thick. The door alone weighs 5 tons.

Yeah in the movie before the tour they showed how a remote controlled drone was used to locate targets and direct the guns during the first Iraq war. The Iraqis came to understand this and The actual footage showed Iraqis holding up white flags and shaking them at the drone to surrender before the big guns were fired at them! So they surrendered to a drone!

Very cool.
Those 16" guns can shoot a VW Beetle 7 miles :-)
Never actually spent time on a battleship, but got transported by as troop carrier once.

Very cool.

Somewhere I read that the USS New Jersey was firing shells off the coast of Lebanon, and the ship was over the horizon and completely out of sight of where the shells landed. That's more than awesome.

Hi Crabman,
What a great camping trip! Your scouts must have had a blast!
Our Troop has camped out at the Buffalo and Erie County Naval and Military Park, aboard the guided missile cruiser the U.S.S. Little Rock. The Buffalo Naval Park is also home to the U.S.S. The Sullivans, and a diesel Sub, the U.S.S. Croaker. This is always a very popular camp out.

One special thing that the park does is show the movie "The Fighting Sullivans" to the scouts. It tells the story of the five Sullivan brothers, and how they fought to stay together when serving in the navy in WWII. When the ship they were on was lost, it caused the navy to change it's policy of having members of the same family serve together on the same ship. It is quite a powerful reminder of the sacrifices made by the men and women of the military, and their families.

Glad that your guys had the opportunity to see the Wisconsin up close and personal!

As a Cub Scout Pack Leader I have done the encampment on the USS New Jersey many times. You sleep in the bunks, eat dinner and breakfast in the mess and have private tours of the ship with a guide! Always had a great time! All except sleeping in the bunks, as I am 6ft 2in tall!

Likes like a good time, thanks for sharing.

Since you were tent camping, did anyone need the poop deck?

Our Troop did the Yorktown and Patriots point trip a couple years ago as well. With that one you sleep in the actual crew bunks instead of tents.

My son and I spent the night with his troop on the U.S.S. Massachusetts. Definitely a memorable experience.
