Excellent Fire Pits at Lake Gogebic SP in Michigan's UP

Cold weather camping is making the rounds in the forum and Michigan's UP gets its fair share of dedicated winter campers. They have what I think are the best fire pits. They are two different size culvert pipes, one inside the other. There is about 6" of space between the pipes all around and it's filled with lava rock. They stick out of the ground about 30" so you can get a lot of wood burning and it gives off heat for a good distance. Some folks never let the fire go out.

Cool stuff.
More places should have this style.
Thanks for sharing,

That's it. BTW, we stopped at Bewabic SP for one night on our way west to Gogebic. It didn't surprise me to find a fire pit like that in Michigan. I've said this in other threads - Michigan has done more than any other state I'm aware of to attract folks who seek the outdoor lifestyle.

You guys got the junk ones. The newer version has concrete poured between the pipe sections. Thanks for the complements on the MI state parks!!!

We had these fire pits at Traverse City and Cadillac State Parks this year also. But there, the area between the rings was filled in with concrete. We saw the company that makes these outside of Cadillac. The worked well.

Ditto for Tawas Bay. From comments here it appears that it is a MI State standard method. We were also impressed with the design, and the campground in general. Huge sites, very nice facilities, and extremely helpful, friendly people. vic

FWIW, Bewabic just this fall upgraded their electrical outlet on the campsites that previously did not have 30 or 50 amp outlets. So now all campsites at Bewabic (except the hike-in ones) have either 30 or 50 amp outlets.

Very nice CG, but when I camped there a few years ago I recall that having a couple extra 30/50 amp power extension cords on hand was a must in many of the campsites, I hope the addition of the new electrical boxes helps.
