Extra power cord on my TT...

Came around the corner of the camper on my last trip, and noticed I had somehow gained an extra power cord.

Wait, that's NOT a power cord! Although you might get a shock if you grab it...

Our visitor was less than impressed with the attention:

I have been camping here for about 10 years, and although it is one of the few habitats left in Canada for the Eastern Black Rat Snake, this is the first one I have actually seen. He made his way across our campsite, started to climb a tree, but by then had drawn a crowd, so slithered off into the woods. Estimate him at 4.5-5' long.

Not a big fan of snakes myself, but I appreciate them. I own some land in the southern part of our state that has a fairly large rattlesnake population. Unfortunately, I've had to shoot more than one that got too close to our site, my dog, my kid, etc..

These guys are non-venomous (very few venomous snakes in Canada) and endangered. It was a real pleasure for us to finally see one; we get garter, grass and water snakes galore, but this guy was a rarity.

Big enough to make the other local wildlife hide in the bushes...

Funny story. During one camping trip this year we had our rubber pet snake we had found some time earlier at another vacant campsite, just outside the main door of the RV. His name is Sammy, and a few trips earlier in the year we found a roadkill rattle snake so we took the tail and attached it to Sammy.
So anyhow, at this particular campsite (State) the hosts came by the first day to validate the post tag. We noticed their hesitance in approaching our site and RV by standing near the driver's side fender and "knocking".
We proceeded outside and had to reassure them that it was a rubber snake. They were startled and leary even though we had just bandaged Sammy earlier that day when we found the rubber split after taking it out of the storage cabinet.
Here is Sammy after receiving his real tail;

These black rat snakes are harmless and do a better job than cats in controlling mice. They are also reported to kill rattlers and copper heads. I too am not a fan of snakes but the rat snake is our friend.

Endangered??? Are you kidding me!!! They are the most populated snake in Ky.

Endangered here in Ontario where they were once fairly common. There are only two fairly small populations left now - the Carolinian and the Frontenac Axis populations. This particular park is one of the nicest Provincial Parks on the Frontenac Axis, and is one of the few places where the snake still thrives.

I suppose we could repopulate with some Southern cousins, but I expect that it is the shrinking habitat that has led to their decline.

I really do feel honored to have finally seen one in the wild, and a fine specimen as well.

Oh come on, all snakes matter. But that's okay, we have lots more bandages where those came from.
We think the hosts were spooked because there happened to be an actual rattler just behind some of the other campsites across the road a few days earlier.
They were adamant about warning those campers with kids of the sighting.

This will turn into one of my 'where do you store your guns' (locked) threads at this rate.

Snakes are fine as long as I don't see them, they don't rattle, and I'm within medivac range.

My daughter kept, raised, and bread snakes. She was really good with them to. She made a few videos for educational purposes. She was studying to be a herpetologist.

https://youtu.be/wciuOH_VtYk

At the time of her death, we had 15 snakes, and 2 geckos in the house.

Sorry for your loss. Watched the video, as a fellow RV'er, Youtuber, blogger, etc, all I can say is the community took a hit the day she left us. My condolences, sincerely. Made me tear up reading your post while watching her video, that's my own daughters age. I wont ask why / what happened. Thank you for sharing a little bit of her with us.

~Mark

IF you kill snakes don't complain about mice in your RV.
