Felt my first Earthquake

5.8 hits Virginia. Our house shook. If you`ve never felt one, and this is my first, its a weird feeling! And now hurricane Irene is headed this way! Arrrghh!

Never felt one....bet that was weird....we are right on the New Madrid fault....last time it went off, the Mississippi flowed backwards and created Realfoot Lake. There was a big scare here in the late 80s and early 90s that we were going to have another one....

Glad you all are all fine!

That's crazy!!!!

I've been at the site of a 5.0 quake, but otherwise the bigger ones here in California we've fortunately have been far enough away that we didn't feel the brunt of one greater than that.

That's a shame for all the old/historic buildings there in Va/DC that of course aren't earthquake proofed. I would hate to see America lose them.

How are things at your house Lee? Any damage? Busted stuff from falling off shelves?

No damage, the house seemingly shook back and forth on its foundation, but very mildly. I was laying down trying to get in a catnap at the time and the bed was moving, kind of like when you have had one too many! I understand the epicenter was out near Charlottesville, quite a ways from here. I`m really more concerned about that Irene cat 2 bearing down on us.

I am willing to bet that this is the first event that will get congress off their butts. Some office buildings in D.C. had to be evacuated. Now after all that exertion they will probably want a recess.

Huricane Irene will be the first for my son and grand daughter. They just moved to Miami.

We are right in the center of NC. My wife asked me to come into the kitchen because the refrigerator was shaking.... It sounded like something was behind it, but nothing there. We got a call a few minutes later from out of state family asking if we felt it. We didn't know what they were talking about!

My co-worker is on vacation in Washington DC so we sent her a text message to make sure she was ok. She never felt a thing!

Yes the reactors automatically shut down at the North Anna plant.

I hope and pray you never feel another one. I really wish ya well with the approaching storm too. Living in Mississippi all my life and I've worked for a Power Utility Company for 28 years, I've seen my share of Hurricanes and the damage they can do,so if you live near the coast or even if you don't and a evacation is ordered in your area, don't think, just go.
SO I WISH ALL OF YOU THE BEST

.
Yup.... all it took was the Los Prietos and the Northridge quake to close things down until they were earthquake retrofitted! Bridges, buildings, but of course we are in Cali. It will be interesting to see how Washington will respond to this

My brother is a 'mucky muck' with Amtrak in DC. I saw on the news that some of Union station was impacted by the quake. I was worried because I couldn't get ahold of my big bro, then my DD txt'ed me and told me to check Facebook! LOL When Verizon/ATT becomes overwhealmed, there's always Facebook!!!

So it was downgraded to a Cat 1? I've never been in a hurricane. I'm guessing you are having to 'batten down the hatches'. What do you do with your boats when this happens? Hope all is well with you

We pull the boats out. Crab house is at the mercy of the storm. I hope it veers out to sea.

Thanks, we`re hoping for the best too, which would be for the storm to track out to sea. I`ve also been through a couple bad hurricanes and numerous near misses and tropical storms. The whole East coast is watching this one.
