Five Dollar gas?

Remember those dire, dreadful predictions of inevitable $5.00 a gallon gas this Summer? $3.25 here today on the solistice. Glad to say "They" were wrong!

But it's refinery cleaning and hurricane season...big oil is just looking for any excuse to get those prices up. The euro situtation is helping us right now but that could change come July 1st when Europe is instilling a trade embargo on Iran oil imports. Iran has issued a statement that it will retaliate by closing the Strait of Hormuz where 20% of the worlds oil passes through. Even if it creates a few days disruption it's going to create tension which will drive the markets high in a hurry...we'll see in a few days I guess...

2 weeks ago, here in Minnesota, I paid $3.39 as I filled up for our trip to Lake Mille Lacs. Last week it went up to $3.79 and for the first time that I can remember, diesel was less than unleaded. There was a big article in the newspaper that our gas was high last week because the Chicago refineries were closed so that they could change over from winter blend to summer blend. Last night I paid $3.54 (less a $.20 discount) so hopefully it is coming down.

In Bedford, VA, I paid $3.05 with a Walmart gas card. I've been the camp host at Smith Mountain Lake State Park for the month of June. Remembering when I started driving in 1958, gas was below $.50. It's good to see the price falling.

Currently $2.93 for regular here in western Virginia. I remember driving an inherited '50 Chevy to high school my senior year, and you couldn't put $4.00 worth of gas in it if it was bone dry. My Mother used to tell how she and her friends back in the mid '30s would borrow one of their Dad's cars, put their pennies together to buy a gallon of gas and go cruising on Saturday night in Hendrysburg, Ohio. Gas was $0.07 a gallon (yes, that's 7 cents), so all they had to contribute was 1 cent apiece. Course, you could buy a whole loaf of bread then for a nickel, and field hands on the farm made 25 cents for a whole day's work, and considered it good wages . . . . . . . How times have changed.

Healthi - just to set the record straight, it is $2.93 here in WESTERN Virginia (as in the Shenandoah Valley of Virginia). Over in neighboring WEST Virginia, it is higher, probably because of all the steep winding roads over the mountains that must be used to get gas trucks in. Folks around here have been a little persnickety about the differences between VA and WV since 1863 when WV split off, but we get along . . . . . mostly.
