Glad I do my own work on my trailer
195 per hour I'm glad I'm doing as much work as possible myself, as usual. Not sure exactly where this CW location is it's from the Jayco RV Facebook group.

That’s $390,000 per year based on fifty 40 hour weeks. For “technicians” that probably make $40k a year. Totally ridiculous for the difficulty of work being done on most of the RVs.

OK, I'll send my wife a bill when she says," You are messing around with the camper today?"

AND, you have to take it back BECAUSE they didn't fix it right the first time. AND you get charged for that also!

In 2014 my wife fell in love with a 1974 Airstream Overlander that was in serious need of a makeover, gave new meaning to nice guys with tools. Crunched the numbers for the worst scene scenario and it would be cheaper than a new plain white box, so it followed us home. The idea Certified RV Technician was just coming into its own back then and all of the tests were online for free. So the retired stationary engineer in me figured why not? Took the tests, all specialties and levels and passed. Sadly they wouldn’t certify since I wasn’t actually working as one. But this lets me know that if I need income where to set up my own business.
Ended up she hated towing and the whole trailer dance, so we’re looking at self propelleds now.

Well if there is an upside to $195.00 an hour labor + parts it gives me a darn good excuse to buy new tools for these “ D I Y “ projects. I don’t even want to know what my other hobbies are costing me. Ignorance is bliss!

Yep, they should have separate lines for receptionist, electricity, rent, license and permits, advertising, insurance, etc. Instead they just lump it all together.

About the same hourly rate as car dealerships and even forklift dealers service departments.

DIY = Happy RVer
I always recomend against people who cannot do their own repairs getting an RV, particularly the cheaply made ones which are all the ones I have seen. It is a rare trip that I don't have to repair something small. Given the repair wait time is usually several weeks if I had to take it to the shop for every little repair I would need to buy two or three units just to keep one on the road. Most RV systems are pretty simple and most repairs are just tightening things before they get to be big repairs.

Now that the warranty is over, I do what I can myself and locate moon-lighters who I know and trust to do the rest. Fortunately, I have been able to perform most of the upkeep and repairs required.

I had a 2013 Jayco 5th wheel. Really nice but was the worst Jayco that I have ever owned. About 3 years after we got it the bedroom slide rotted and I built stilks to support it and replaced the floor of the slide out with marine grade plywood and reinstalled all of the drive unit. The next year the inside paneling on the rear was rotted out when we started on our first spring trip. Took it back to our dealer and traded for a new 2018.
The dealer said that I did a good job on the bedroom slide repair and was very impressed.
I just thought about the money that I saved DIY and probably gave it back to them on my trade!

I do all my own work and have even done some that should have been warranty. To me the out of pocket dollars were worth every cent just to know the repair had been done my way and I didn't lose a camping season waiting for a sub par dealer to do the work...

I have done some what would be considered warranty work as well. Dragging the trailer 100 miles, dropping it off, being at their mercy when the work gets done, then going back and towing it home just ain't worth it and does not appeal to me. Time lost and fuel burned is a big enough factor.
