Gulf of Mexico Oil Spill

Any of you live on or near the Gulf Coast, as I do, awaiting the effects of the oil spill off the coast of Louisianna ?

With the economy already low in the area, things are about to worsen. Tourism, commercial and sports fishing surely will suffer even more. It appears as though southwest winds will push the oil into the Florida Panhandle, Alabama and Mississippi sooner than later.

The Alaskan oil spill a few years back was mostly in a remote area. The area along the Gulf of Mexico is densly populated in some areas and the home of some of the most beautiful beaches in the world. The lastest I've heard is that the oil still flows from the deepsea well. Quite different from the known amount of the Alaskan tanker a few years back.

Do we have any members along the coast that expect to be affected ?

That is sad. A lot of people and animals will be horribly affected. We just returned from a trip to see my aunt/uncle in Ft Myers. Not sure how they will be affected. We got to do a quickie cruise while in Florida. We watched about the spill from the cruise ship. Hope it doesn't take as long as they think it will to clean it up

'tis a shame - no matter how you look at it; environmentally, economically, and the poor folks who lost loved one's in the accident. This is one event that'll be remembered for an awful long time.

I lived in Homestead, FL for a time - the ecosystem along the coasts are so vulnerable and much of the coastal economies are dependent on the fisheries there. This is going to affect everyone to one degree or another.

I didn't mean to forget those who had lost their lives during the rig explosion. I've really not heard much anput that lately. Last I heard there were several still missing. I don't know if the Coast Guard ever located them. In an explosion of that type, they may never be located.

What you say about the coast is certainly true McMonk.

This thing still spews thousands of gallons of crude into the Gulf everyday. It sure is taking some time to stop the flow.
