Has anyone "Panned for Gold" as a recreational outing?
Some years ago I read an article about "Different Outdoor Things To Do", one of them was panning for gold.
The article stated there were places that would outfit you, teach you, and take you to places where gold had been found. They made it known that there were no get rich quick stories associated with this type of activity. For most people it was a different experience in the great outdoors. Some folks did find enough gold to pay for the day.

My dad and I actually did some panning. I think it was around 1963 when gold was a whopping $35.00 an ounce. We dug and panned some dirt from the bottom of a natural spring running out of an abandoned mine in the New Mexico mountains which had been closed many years before . I remember after a few hours, we ended up with some dust which was worth no more than a couple dollars at 1963 prices but the experience was priceless.

We did that in Dahlonega, Ga.. Used to be a US mint before the civil war. Lots of history and places to pan for gold.

We panned a few times on trips out to Montana as a kid. I was thinking about doing it this summer, when we are out there. We also “mined” for gems out there too. We clearly did much better looking for gems then gold.

Just be careful I doubt if you can do that in any nat parks or blm type of land...

Here in VA/NC is a 20-mile wide by some 200 miles long gold vein that run from northern VA down into NC. This follows the Blue Ridge mountains on the EAST side. This was actually producing gold before the gold rush in Calif...
There has been alot of recent gold activity centered around a town called DILLWYN VA and lots of folks heading that way camping out and panning for gold. Several towns around here have the word GOLD in their name.
I am going to spend a couple weekends down there to check it out... Sounds like fun...

We always have a gold pan in our camper. We love panning in the creeks on most trips. Never found a nugget but we have a few viles full of gold flakes. Loads of fun and kids are really starting to enjoy it.

mcfarmall - sure is a wiley bunch.... Looks like next season may be spread pretty thin... Three or four said they wasn't coming back and the kid is going farther north to pan for gold. Some are going to Australia...
Thats where you find me on Fridays nights as well hehe...

the father-in-law has all the gear we are going to have to borrow it before we start camping this year sounds like fun and my boy will love it. hopefully we can find at least a speck to keep interest.
