Hershel McGriff

I basically quit following racing when Dave Marcis retired, but for the past year I have been amazed by the legendary ageless racing wonder Hershel McGriff.

McGriff, age 83, competed in the NASCAR K&N Pro Series West at Portland International Raceway on July 24, 2011. He started 28th in the 30 car field and finished 14th, on the lead lap of the 1.944 mile road course.

This was McGriff's 3rd NASCAR K&N Pro Series West race this year. On April 30, 2011 he started 32nd in a 34 car field on the 2.2 mile road course at Miller Motorsports Park, Toole, Utah and finished 16th.

At Infineon Raceway on June 25, 2011 he started 40th in the 41 car field and finished 20th on the lead lap!

Based on Hershel's performance one can rest assured that this is no "start and park" publicity stunt. In fact, he has not received a great deal of media attention which is unfortunate.

Thought maybe some of you here might appreciate this little known fact.

Boss, thanks for posting this about McGriff...to tell you the truth, can't say that I remembered him but did remember Dave Marcus. After reading your post, I Googled McGriff and did a little more research on him. He has an interesting history for sure. I'm not a "dyed in the wool" NASCAR fan but did follow Ned and Dale Jarret pretty much, course Dale was driving and ex-driver Ned was announcing the NASCAR races when I got interested in them. Richard Petty is and will always be the King and for my own reasons, I did not like Dale Earnhart (and I know I could get tarred and feathered for saying that). As far as the new kid drivers of today, they are good but the old legendary drivers are what NASCAR is all about, and who made NASCAR great, in my opinion. Thanks for sharing this.
