Holiday Camping Poll

With Memorial Day fast approaching I thought a little holiday poll was in order. Do you camp on holidays?

I know that this subject will get divided responses. For us, it makes sense to camp on holidays. The kids are out of school, there are no ball games/Scouting events scheduled on holiday weekends to conflict with or rush home to. We do not travel far so traffic is a minimal issue. And I am yet to experience the bad/rowdy/rude/loud campers that so many have reported encountering on these holidays (I know, I`m due!). Of course many of the State Parks we frequent have no alcohol policy and are patrolled regularly by Rangers during major holidays. The parks also have themes and activities for kids to do that may not be offered on a slow weekend.

Now if you do not have younger children, are retired, or have to travel far and fight holiday traffic and crowds then I can see why this may not be desirable. It just works for us.

About half of the time we take the grandkids (or some of them) when we go camping and it's usually a busy weekend or holiday. If its just the two of us, we tend to go when there are a lot of people around.....I hate to go to WalMart, KMart, TargetMart, malls, anywhere that there is a large concentration of people except we love to go to a full campground....I guess we just like the quality of people we see at the campgrounds....a different breed of folks. An empty campground is just not as much fun. Luckily our membership campground has 5 sections and there is a kids section, Seniors section and a rowdy section and everyone tends to go where they are suppose to go.

Never! To much traffic. Stay at home and have a cookout with family and friends.

Since I am retired I leave the crazy camping weekends to the families. I will go right after the long weekend

Memorial Day: Almost always
Flag Day (a state holiday in Pennsylvania): Occasionally
Fourth of July: Once in a blue moon
Labor Day: About 50-50 (No, so far for this year, but who knows?)
Columbus Day: Almost always (but so far, no plans this year)

We did our maiden voyage Easter weekend, but came home on Easter Sunday.

Since both of us are retired, there is no reason for us to compete with everybody else for both the road and the camping spots.
We like to go either the weekend before or the weekend after. :hihi:

From Memorial day to Labor day we camp on our river lot. After Labor day we start heading South so we camp them all.

We prefer the 'quiet' campground life. As we've gotten a bit older, we've become intolerant of the super-crowded-every-site-full-of-rowdy-intoxicated-pseudoadults-and-unsupervised-children-and-pets-everywhere-waiting-in-line-for-showers-and-toilets type camping.
I want a quiet evening around the fire listening to the whippoorwills-n-crickets, my occasional guitar, and nearby gentle laughter of other folks making memories and enjoying the same.

As I anticipated we are getting very mixed responses and votes. The poll says it all. I only wish I had the time and money to camp on the quiet days and the holidays!

Here in Minnesota, Sandy and I try to camp as many weekends as we can. That would include holiday weekends.
We see our camping season as about 26 - 28 weeks long (Mothers Day weekend to Mid-October weekend), so we take advantage of any weekend we have available. Our first season (2008) with the Jayco, we camped on 14 weekends.
Last year, we camped 15 weekends AND we took a 10 day vacation to go to the Black Hills in South Dakota.

See, you are camping with the "crowds" after all this weekend! Enjoy.

We have only had the TT since July 10...but try and go any chance we get...holiday weekends included...BUT...with 3 boys in sports, free weekends are not usually part of our vocabulary! Will try to do some nearby weekends this fall so we can grab a few minutes around the campfire and get the boys to their games!

I try to take advantage of holiday weekend camping as it allows me to have more days off while consuming fewer vacation days. For example I can get 9days off (away from work) while only burning 4 vacation days.

We really enjoy planning our trips with the holiday at the start, that way we can enjoy a little peace and quiet after everyone leaves in a mad dash.

We aren't retired and would like to camp on the holidays. However, the last 3 times we tried it we either couldn't find a spot or we took a spot that was poor and crammed in with other folks.

So bottom line...now we take a Friday or Monday off and go on our own long weekend.

I go out, when I can get a spot reserved.
But, that is when what I call, "the rookie campers" go out. Some people only camp the holidays and that's it.....

I paid for it, I will play with it any time I want!
