Math problem
I will never pass grade school math.
You need to do a task for 9 minutes; however you only have two hourglasses to utilize. You have a 4 minute hourglass and a 7 minute hourglass. How do you determine with only 9 minutes have passed.
Any thoughts?

Start both, flip the 4 min when finished and also flip the 7 min which is now become a 5 min timer when flipped over. Done.

Start both timers:
When 4 min timer runs out (4 min total time)turn it over:
When 7 min timer runs out (7 min total time now) turn it over:
When 4 min timer again runs out (8 min total time now) turn 7 min timer over:
When 7 min timer now runs out you have 9 minutes.
All of these are predicated on the assumption that the flow in the timers is constant from start to finish.

Open ice chest. Pop the top. Consume. 9 minutes on a decent day.

You have the wrong timepieces to solve the problem.
By definition, an HOURGLASS measures in units of an Hour.
Calling something a 7 minute hourglass is like calling something else a trombone Chevy.
Snowbird 47 did a great job.
I just don't understand eldermike's math.

I have to agree with Snowbird. That is what I figgered out. I do like Tgallagher's timer much better.
Regarding the term "hourglass" I've often wondered if the sand in an hourglass was supposed to take one hour to fall.
Speaking of terms for items. I have two sticks of wood at my house. Both or marked in "one inch" increments. I call the one that has 36 one inch increments on it a "Yardstick", but the one that has 48 one inch increments on it, I don't know what to call it.

I have a couple of hour glasses. And yes, they are fairly accurate in measuring an hour's time.
I don't know what the name for a 4 foot measuring stick is.
Yardstick is 3 feet
Meter stick is 39.3 inches
Cubit is 1.5 feet
Fathom is 6 feet.

I think that if somebody here has a grandkid that is in 2 or 3 grade than ask them. They will know the answer.

Next time you go to a hardware store ask them if they have a yard stick. When they show you one ask if they have one shorter. The look on their face is priceless.

My 48 inch "stick" is a level. If yours doesn't have a bubble glass in it, then it's just a 4 foot measuring stick.
