Michiganders? Need some help here!

Hi Michiganders and other fans of the state of Michigan.

Does anyone know what the letter (first character) on a Michigan permanent trailer plate designates?

I've seen "A", "B", "C" and "D" so far...

I have searched the Secretary of State's (like a lame DMV for people in Michigan) wretched website to find absolutely zero help.

Thanks!

JR

Not from MI, but sounds like just part of the sequential numbering. Since they are perm there are only so many number sets to use.

To my knowledge, they start with A and work through the alphabet. Certain parts of the state may be assigned certain letters as the supply for that letter becomes exhausted.

Just as Grumpy said, its sequential for all plates issued, no difference between A, B,C,D etc

Just to add to this post... There was a time when I was a trooper with the Michigan State Police that cars were three letter then three numbers. After those were used up, it was three numbers then three letters. Commercial vehicles (including pickup trucks, taxis etc.) we're two letters and four numbers. That was reversed when when the former were used up. THEN it became political and saturated with vanity plates and scrambled the whole system. The trailer plate, however, should just climb in letters until all the combinations are used up.

Michigan is not a driver/camper friendly state in my opinion.

I have VERY strong feelings about that, but I'll leave it there, and keep my blood pressure low!

I hear ya! Don't even get started on 2A or insurance! I'm 2.5 miles from the Indiana state line... tempting.

I know! I know! Just had that thought the other day, as we are only a few miles from Ohio, where the roads immediately change from wretched roads to great roads, when you cross into Ohio. Not sure what Michigan does with the "road fix-it money" they get?

Anyways, apologies to all, for the rant, I'm done now!

You're not alone. Things in Illinois are not any better. I'm only 9 miles from Wisconsin and it's where I'm originally from. I can't get DW to move across the cheddar curtain though as she is from here.
