If you go there I'd be interested in how it is. Friends from BC were talking about spending a bit of time there this winter. Xscapers is having a rendezvous over in San Felipe this winter

By virtue of not only camping in MX (baja side), and being a full time resident here for 18 years, I can speak with a bit of authority on MX camping in general.

The main "danger" of it all, depends on where the camping is going to take place.
With certainty, I would not camp in the outskirts of Tijuana nor Ciudad Juarez, south of El Paso.

The "danger" is becoming a victim of "collateral damage" between rival drug gangs.
Every town, in every State, either the USA or Mexico has criminals doing the criminal thing.....taking what they don't have and what you do have...by some means of force or fear, or under the cover of darkness and in a manner of "sleight of hand".

Lessen the chance of becoming a chunk of collateral damage, by researching everything you can about the area you wish to go.

Drug gangs (the main source of violence) do not "normally" target the casual tourist.

Puerto Penasco, aka Rocky Point, is not a drug gang hotspot, or a hotbed of random criminal acts against tourists.

Regardless, it is sage advice to keep your wits about you, be it Rocky Point or downtown Los Angeles or any other city, that has a substantial area of "inner" city surroundings.

Always conduct yourself in a manner that belies your "visitor" status in a foreign country.

Follow the advice of seasoned Mexico travelers and apply them, based on your particular instance.
A 911 call to law enforcement in Mexico is not quite up to par, as it is when calling 911 in Arizona, and having an AZ Trooper come screaming up with sirens blaring, to your aid.

You and anyone else, will be fine in Rocky Point.

We would rather go to Houston, The Keys, San Diego (Dog Beach) or any place other than outside of the USA. The biggest reason is taking out pets (dog, cat, birds) where Canada is a pain and inconsistent. The biggest reason we avoid Mexico is the number of border and interior killings and robberies that are shown in the AZ papers and news.
