Padre Island pics

Here are a few pictures I've taken so far here on Padre Island. I think the helicopter is DEA. The camp host said there's lots of drug stuff going on around here.

hey Bill, were you boondocking? is there a cool RV park in South Padre? I live in San antonio and have been wanting to go, but i am told the only place is the KOA, and that is not all that great. I'd appreciate your feedback

On the Padre Island seashore, camping is totally free- no permit required. At Bird Island Basin inside the park you can get a one day permit for $5, or an annual permit for $10. Both have no hookups, so I guess it's boondocking. But there's fresh potable water at the dump station near the visitors center, and you're allowed to use them when boondocking here.

Either on the seashore or BIB, camping is limited to four 2 week periods per year inside the park. After two weeks, you have to leave the park for 2 days before you can start another 2 weeks of camping.

And there's a campground with hookups, not sure if it's both electric and water. Cost is $8 a night, $4 a night with the Golden Eagle pass.

We do get to camp soon.... we are going to head out for a week on Tuesday, although we will stay "local" (an hours drive up the road). Darn it if it's supposed to go from the 70's back to rain when we leave though *pout*

Bill, were you the one who was planning on going further west to Calif? Either way, sounds like Cali isn't going to happen for ya this time. I hear ya about staying put on shorter treks next year. With gas prices going up, we are thinking this next trip of ours in the spring will be the last x-country for a long while

If you decide to head over to Big Bend National Park, consider staying at Davis Mountains State Park near Fort Davis, Texas. Great campground, near McDonald Observatory (tours of the telescope available), near Fort Davis National Historic Site (partially renovated frontier fort with historical interpretation), and an hour's drive from Big Bend National Park.

SmokerBill, I go to Padre Island, BIB windsurfing every spring and fall. They rent gear and give lessons at WorldWinds on BIB. Try it.

I'll be there in late April and through end of May. Wonderful region of our country.
