People Live in this Stuff Called Snow?!
OMG! I am in Milwaukee and we are under a BLIZZARD watch. I am a native coastal Californian
LOL We "do" snow to play in the mountains with chains on our tires! But here, no one uses chains! I don't have drive though (visiting relatives who DO snow in the Winter!), but MAN! It be COLD here! But the newly fallen snow sure is pretty

Isn't that cute! A Californian in "real" snow!
We are expecting about 30cm, or 1 foot, of blowing snow tonight.
Bring it on!
Why would you need chains on your tires?

Over from my web site my members are screaming about the blowing and drifting snow...
Quote:
Going to be -12F tomorrow night. We were in the eye of the storm with 2ft of snow and the wind is so fierce that the snow drifts are up to 5ft, even in the middle of the road. Driving home in my brothers dakota, I usually lug it at 1200RPM when I have to drive slow (15mph), but I was pushing snow to the point that it would flat out kill it, I had to run 2000+RPM for that little V6 to not peter out.
I walked out to the garage in all the snow drifts, walked back out a minute later and couldn't find my footprints. You can barely breath it is so windy. The snow is coming down in sheets. At the edge of the house the wind is taking the snow away, you can see grass, but past the edge of the house is a line of a 4ft snow drift, right next to the bare grass.
But, my truck is in the garage, hasn't been touched by a snowflake lol.

My son just got back from a Mock Trial competition in at Cornell last week. When they landed in Ithaca, he texted, "Dad, there's snow EVERYWHERE!" He said it never stopped the entire time he was there. He was glad to land back in good ol' NC!

healthi,
It's just a small part of our Wisconsin weather. Wait 'till the wind chill gets down to -40. Six months from now we'll be complaining about the heat and humidity. Then a cold front will go thru and we'll be under a tornado watch. You learn to deal with it all. I have a SIL from Novato, CA that visits us every 3 or 4 years and she just loves the thunder and lightning when a power thunderstorm rolls through. She says they don't get them out there. If she was ever camping in one though she might have a different opinion. Enjoy your visit.

Good Gosh.....and I thought we had it bad in West Texas with 2 degrees temp and wind chill of negative 20 degrees (which is definately extreme for this part of the country). I will quit griping about our weather now. At least the 1/2 inch of snow that we got blew away.

LOL!
Educated guess is that chains are needed in snowy mountains because the shady curves have a lot of 'black ice' (?). In Big Bear itself, I don't remember a lot of streets being plowed and it can snow every day. I guess chains give you traction (?). Perhaps it's because most of the people that drive in it come from L.A. and other local lower elevations that don't get snow and folks like me are clueless on how to drive in it (?). I really don't know... just know if you don't have chains at about 3500+ elevation, the CHP will have you park until you get some

Here is my snow experience so far... which isn't too bad
1- two days before blizzard
2- morning after blizzard
3- snow drift up to window sill and blocking door (my cousin can't open either door, but a neighbor is snow blowing the back door so we can get out )

healthi,
I checked out your utube link. Yup, pretty typical T-storm. Looks like you got some good snow pics to take back and share.
FYI snow chains give real good traction. I'm old enough to remember when studded snow tires were legal here in Wis. They did chew up the roads pretty good though and were banned back in '73 IIRC.

Don't feel bad I hate lightning too... Been really close to it before... Close enough to smell the ozone and electrical tingle...

There is nothing like the feel and smell of a very close lightning strike.

Well my story quick...
I was sitting on my front porch with my step dad and the family dog and made the comment like any curious kid "Boy I would sure like to see lightning up close." Well I got my wish the house across the street from me got hit shortly after I said it. You could fell the heat generated, the loud boom, and smell the ozone from it. It scared us all so bad we ran in the house.
Come to find out it hit the TV antenna, blew up the TV, caught the living room on fire which the owner managed to put out.
So to this day I don't mind watching lightning storms but I can stand to sleep through them. I want to see it coming... (Like I can dodge it - Right...)
