proper sewage discharge
I would appreciate some discussion about an incident that happened today at Devils Lake State Park in Wisconsin. Ive been camping for 60 plus years and tt camping for the last 30 plus years. I was discharging "black water" with my drain in line with and less than 3 feet from the drain. A camper pulled up behind me and the woman on the passenger side got out and yelled at me that I could not discharge without using tubing. I thanked her for her advise and finished the dump. Ive been doing the discharge without tubing (as have everyone else Ive seen) since I got my first tt with a toiliet as long as I was with in the curbed apron that surrounds the drain. I would appreciate your feedback. I wasnt aware of any campground protocol that required tubing nor am I aware of any sanitary reasons for using tubing for the 2 to 3 feet that I normally use. The woman's anger and outrage were such that I wondered if there is something Im missing.
Thanks

Every campground I have visited or worked at required a hose and a connection so odors were not an issue. I believe in many if not all, areas hoses are also required by laws. I would never discharge anything open, I think it's rude to anyone else nearby. Most places you can't even leave a drain open, due to odors .
I think she was correct in her accusations.

I've dumped just like you a few times but feel like I should use the sewer hose to keep things neat. She probably figured you were like some of the slobs I've seen who don't rinse the area after they dump.
She probably could have been a bit more polite though....

I have only owned motorhomes where the sewer outlet was in a compartment requiring a hose to get it out of the unit. But I can also say that camping in motorhomes since 1985 and following many other campers in all types of rigs through the dump station, I have never seen it done without a sewer hose.
Just lucky I guess.

Nor have I. I cannot imagine dumping my disgusting black water tank without a hose in the receptacle. I hope I am never behind someone in line at a dump station that empties this way.

I can't imagine how unsanitary the whole area would soon become if everyone dumped like this. The splashing alone would contaminate the underside of your own rig, plus anything within a wide area. I have never seen this done and to think of it is disgusting. It only takes a few minutes to connect and disconnect the hose.
But I have seen many disgusting things people do in campgrounds. Kids peeing in the playground, dogs pooping and owners don't bother to pick it up etc. And what they do in restrooms is totally disgusting. I could post pictures but I'm sure it would get flagged as inappropriate.
People are pigs... .SOME people, most are really great. No respect for anyone else, you see it in so many ways.. very sad.

Wow... I'm not sure that there is much to discuss, unless we want to talk about disgusting, rude, inconsiderate behavior and how somebody can lack common sense.

Lucky for me, I have never seen anyone dump without proper dump hose.
I find it hard to believe "ptr4ns" that most you have seen dump do it without a proper hose or tubing.
I would have rubbed your nose in it! Kudos for that lady to call you on it!

+1 on the hose; I've never seen anyone NOT use one. Many years ago I worked as a draftsperson for an engineering company who had a contract with the municipality to do some work on a sewage treatment plant. I had to work on-site, and I can tell you first hand just how nasty untreated sewage can be. It's even classified as hazmat in some jurisdictions.

X1000!!
I can't even wrap my head around this!
You seriously dump your black tank on the concrete pad?
Are you insane!
Do you crap on your bathroom floor too?
I cannot believe I have walked on those concrete pads with my shoes.
I would be doing a lot more than yelling if I see someone doing that.
This is a joke right?

Being an instructor by trade have always stood by the notion that there is no such thing as a dumb question. Well this I have to admit is amoust the top 5 dumbest things I ever heard. and hope that I never see someone dumping without a hose. Proper camping edicate was just discussed on here few weeks ago, we'll here's another example who needs to practice it.

Maybe if you have been camping for 60 years there was a time when people dumped without a hose. Thankfully I've never seen it.
Time to invest in a good hose with the proper air tight fittings.

I saw someone do that in a Florida SP, I promptly reported him and pointed his site to the ranger. They were asked to leave the park and the Fire Dept called to wash down the dump station.
This thread is an example of how common sense has gone away in the human race.
