Quiet Hours - Generators?
Maybe I'm wrong. Family members that don't camp seem to think so.
Setting is a NFS campground, no hookups, but fire rings, picnic tables, bathrooms, and a bulletin board with announced quiet hours from 10 pm until 6 am.
Situation, four days of quiet bliss on Lake Superior. Cool evening temperatures, comfortable daytime temps in the low 80s. Lots of tents, pop ups, a few Class As, and a couple 5ers. Then . . .
Thursday a larger trailer pulls in and at 2 pm sets up and fires up his open frame generator and it runs continuously until I had enough and left Saturday afternoon. They would leave the campsite and keep it running while they were gone. When asked to shut it off during quiet hours (at least) he told people the rangers told him quiet hours meant TVs and radios not essential equipment like generators. He also told the tent camper next to him there are no nannies in the woods and he was just jealous because he was in a tent. My DW asked me to not talk to him, which was the smart thing.
No park hosts, no cell service, and when I stopped in the ranger station on Friday there were a dozen cars but no one answered my knock on the door. I left a message but never saw a ranger.
I've seen specific signs about no generators and this campground did not have that sign, only quiet hours from 10 pm until 6 am. What do y'all think?

I'm sure he's really proud of himself for chasing you out of the campground. You're lucky he didn't pull out his trusty six-shooter and kill you when you tried to talk some sense into his head. These generators are ruining our campgrounds, the people that can't camp without them belong in electric sites.

I didn't speak with him but from what I understand from his neighbors, he seemed to be a know it all newbie. Hopefully he'll learn or like you said find campgrounds with electric.

That is one reason I try not to camp too close to others. I also dislike the lights from some RVrs who prefer to a keep bright light(s) on all night long. In any case, I always take the high road and do not worry with what others are doing for the most part. They can run their generator, play music, drink beer and smoke dope all night long (have had that experience) and if there is no enforcement of any rules then I don't make an issue out of it or try to enforce them either, instead I do what I can to enjoy my time and then move along somewhere else or try to find a place where I am already at but a little further away for the next night. ~CA

Fact - Many generator oil drain plugs can be quickly and quietly removed with a small crescent wrench, running or not.

Oh, a couple people considered removing the spark plug and hiding it. The guy next to him probably would have if someone had a socket that fit.
My DW mentioned if there had been other issues this wouldn't have seemed so wrong. But it was perfect from Sunday until Thursday at 2 pm.

Or just add a bottle of Karo Syrup to the oil. That really quiets them down.

Black River Harbor. We're planning on revisiting the area in the next year or two. Probably stay at the State Park close by and Pictured Rock. We may even stay again at Black River Harbor.
Wait was that you? Lol

Wonder if he was refering to the painted rocks Nat. Seashore area. It's been a really long time, but if I recall, there's a campground called 12 mile or some such that would fit the bill. Great place in between black fly hatches.
Oops...someone types faster than me.....

This is from the BOONDOCKER's BIBLE and addressed the various FED parks.
None of the jurisdictions below state that generators must be shut off at night, they only state that you must not make unreasonable noise.
So he may have very well been told that the geny was OK.

Thanks Grumpy. Unreasonable is such a poor standard to apply.

I'm certain it was reasonable to him, he couldn't hear it over the television. I'm also certain it was unreasonable to the tent camper next to him and four others who commented.
Still all in all that was the only bad campground experience in an almost 5 week trip. I consider myself lucky.

I agree.
Thankfully there are numerous boondocking/rustic campgrounds within Michigan's Lower/Upper Peninsula's that do have posted rules specifically addressing "quiet times" for generators. They also post that a running generator can't be left unattended.

Here in Montana, quiet hours in the NF means no generators.

Per the NPS, 9 pm to 8 am is generator quiet hours.
https://www.nps.gov/blri/planyourvis...egulations.htm
During our daily outings I would have contacted the cops or park service even if I had to drive a bit further.

Per NPS, the District Commander sets the rules for the NP (36 CFR 327.12)
At Blue Ridge Parkway, 9PM.
At GSM NP, 8PM.
Local rules apply.
Since I just LOVE my generator and don't like dead batteries, I try to keep up.
