Rattlesnakes!

I just watched a pair of rattlesnakes humping away like there's no tomorrow. I could only see about 8" of the tail ends of both of them, since their forward sections were inside a galvanized drainage ditch. One of them had 12 buttons on its rattle. The other had 8 or so.

And all this entertainment only 20' away from my trailer! I took a lot of pics, and will post some here later. And to think I was planning on hiking through the sagebrush up to the top of the hill behind my campsite. Glad I'm lazy!

What side of the mountains do you live on? I am on the wet side and have never seen a rattler, although I understand they are around.
We did see a baby sidewinder in eastern California a couple years ago.

I'm camping near the dam at Banks Lake right now. The rattlesnakes are evidently using the drain culvert as a den. Bet there's more than two in there!

I guess I could've gotten a nice belt and hatband out of the deal! But nah, they weren't bothering me, so I just enjoyed watching them. Anyway, I didn't feel like skinning and gutting a pair of snakes, even if rattlesnake tastes pretty good.

LOL! Wrong kind of rattlers, TWP. They were making these. That's a dime in the picture.

The snakes reminded me of a time, long ago, when I walked up on a pair of box turtles copulating in the woods. That precarious position those turtles were in would definitely not be found in the Kama Sutra.

I watched them too. Guess that makes me a voyeur.

Well snakes, even innocuous ones, bother me greatly. I don't carry a shovel with me - but I do carry lead slingers.

They would have gotten a few doses of Bang! from me. You're welcome to any left-overs.

If you go to a local, state, or national park or campground and kill the wildlife you might find yourself with more problems than the critter would have caused you. If you can't deal with the natural environment maybe you best not go. Funny how people go someplace because of its features and once there feel obliged to change it to suit there needs. Those snakes are fat and happy because they have a good food source. Most likely they are responsible for keeping the rodent population under control. Don't bother them and they won't bother you.

DW has story about giant tortoises in a park she worked at. The male was on the back of the female making very loud noises. A youngster asked the mom, "Why doesn't he just go around."

I guess we are all voyeurs now.
