RC builder/flyers

I was curious if any of you are RC builders or pilots. I concentrate on Golden Era designs with RC controls. I mostly fly brushless Lipoly combinations, although I also enjoy glow too.

Use to fly two powered gliders. Have a couple electric boats on the shelf. Now I have been playing more with dune buggies and trucks.

Both my wife and I fly RC..have been since 2003. We fly electric planes only using LiPo batteries. We started when we lived in Quartzsite, but now fly off our club field in Kingman.

The annual Quartzsite Fun Fly is coming up on Feb. 15, so if your in the Quartzsite area stop by. No admission and free parking. The flying field is at the North end of the Town Park on Plymouth Ave. Both of us will be flying in the event.

Some of our planes:

Years ago I designed, built, and flew RC Turbine powered jets. One of my maiden flights of a design here:

I have since left the hobby, but it holds a special place in my heart for sure!

Nice job.

There is a little difference in today's "builders". They do not build from scratch or a kit. The days of true "building" are gone.

My O-2 was a KMP Cessna 337 that I completely redid into a Vietnam era forward air control aircraft right down to the correct decals, paint and markings.

Interesting I was selling a RV item on local Craig's List and the guy who bought it saw my O-2 when he came to pick up the item. He said "I was a prop expert in a jet world during Vietnam" He flew the O-2 during those years.

It was headed that way when I was designing and building. I'm not really turned on by ARF's, and balsa building was never interesting to me. Laminates was extremey interesting to me. That jet had a cellular structure, the fuse weighed 24 ounces was laminated Rohocell with 1/2 ounce fiberglass. The jet had a better than 1/1 thrust to weight ratio on takeoff and could accelerate vertically full of fuel. At the time I invested in a CNC Mill and Lathe and those landing gear were custom made out of titanium, including the wheels and brakes. I definitely was all in on designing building and flying. Thanks for the compliment

I got started in RC Heli about 6 years ago... Spent a fortune on what turned into an obsession for a while.. moving up from bird to bird and ended most of my flying with a Blade 450 Collective pitch. DW then bought me a DJI Phantom and I have not flown the 450 since. I can think about having a beer before flying the DJI - it is all I fly anymore.

I also fly a DJI Mavic but I don't think having a beer before flying anything is a good idea. A couple of pounds of drone moving at 30+ mph is a weapon if used improperly.
