Regional Fast Food Chains Travelers Shouldn't Miss

We tend to eat fast food on our long driving days and have found some regional chains that we look forward to revisiting. After watching a review on the YouTube channel It's a Southern Thing, and trusting Matt, we stopped at Bojangles while in the southeast. Excellent for fast food.

I'm not certain if Waffle House is considered regional or national but it's always been a good stop for us.

We had a Maid Rite in Hannibal, MO that was a fun stop.

Not necessarily a specific restaurant but Lobster rolls in Maine are a must have lunch.

And of course when we return to Texas a Whataburger stop is required to regain our status as Texans.

In my area it is Taco John's. The potato oles are excellent. If you need to feed a few people order the six pack and a pound.

I have only seen the "Waffle House" in the southeastern United States; ie - Kentucky, Tennessee, North Carolina, Georgia, etc. Never seen that chain on the west coast.

Out here in California the place to stop is "In & Out Burger". The best hamburgers and fries at a good price. They're especially popular in southern and central CA and their menu is very simple, much like McDonald's used to be in the 50's & early 60's.

Not specifically fast food, but western PA has Eat 'n Park and Kings family restaurants that are very good. Depending on the specific locations, some of them have lots big enough to get an RV in and out without issue.

X2
They have been popping up around Texas as well. We have two or three in San Antonio. Nice simple menu and the burgers are very good.

If you find yourself in Nebraska you need to try Runza. Funny name but great food. Everything is homemade. The signature menu item is the World Famous Runza Sandwich.

Cracker Barrel is our favorite meal stop. RV parking at most all of them.

Lots aren’t RV sized, but in the mid-West and now in Atlanta area is Culver’s. Excellent burgers and custard to finish it off.

x2 You beat me to it! Culver's started in Wisconsin and is all over the Midwest and spreading. We eat there a lot and the frozen custard is a great after lunch treat.

Another fun place to stop is Dog N Suds, a drive in found in the Midwest. Most have picnic tables since you can't get your RV under the canopy.

Freddy's has a decent steakburger if you're traveling in Indiana.

X2 on Runza! If you're ever in Michigan's northern lower peninsula or UP (or, I suppose Wisconsin and even Minnesota), you have to buy a pasty from a local restaurant. It's like a beef stew sandwich! In fact, I'd call it Michigan's version of a Runza!

Legal Sea Food

If you are in New England, Legal Seafood is a great regional restaurant chain. Fresh seafood, expertly cooked. Its pricey, but very good. They also have a spot at Reagan National in DC and the airport in Philly.

In & Out Burger when we are in Arizona.

Roy's All Steak Hamburgers (2 locations in Auburn, Maine).

El Tequila Mexican Restaurant. Excellent Mexican food, located in various Maine locations.

X3. We've been eating at Culvers since they opened their first franchise store in Baraboo, WI in 1990. We used to camp at at Devils Lake SP outside of Baraboo. Now we have a Culvers 5 minutes from home.

If you are in the Milwaukee area looking for the best burger and the best custard, I highly recommend Kopps. Only 3 locations. It's been my favorite since I was a kid, and I've had a lot of great burgers over the years.

I you're ever in the area around Puget Sound, try Taco Time. Even though it's a fast food Mexican style restaurant, the food is high quality and tastes great.

There are 3 waffle house restaurants in AZ, which isn't very many, but their food is worth the drive - and make sure to stop and get an angiogram on the way home...
